Ana Mafalda Abrantes is an Internal Medicine resident at Hospital Santa Maria, after she successfully graduated in 2018 at Faculty of Medicine - University of Lisbon. Since her residency, her main interest areas are autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular risk. She is an active member of the Immunomediated Diseases Group at the same hospital since 2022, having followed over 100 patients over the past 3 years. In 2023, she attended a three-month fellowship in Rheumatology and Research in the Rheumatology Department of University College London Hospital under the supervision of Professor David Isenberg. In this period, she acquired expertise in managing patients with several autoimmune conditions, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome. She also participated in four research projects, two of them as a research leader. Currently, she is working on the development of damage and its links to mortality in Sjogren’s syndrome, as well as on the long-term outcome in antiphospholipid syndrome after antiphospholipid antibodies seronegativization. She has published 12 articles, 4 of them as first author, predominantly in high-impact journals in Rheumatology and Cardiovascular disease. Her work was presented at several national and international meetings in Internal Medicine. In 2022, she won the Helena Saldanha/Boehringer-Ingelheim award from the National Society for Internal Medicine regarding the role of glycated albumin in the management of diabetic patients. In the academic field, Ana Mafalda Abrantes is an invited assistant of Clinical Semiology at Faculty of Medicine - University of Lisbon since 2019. She is also responsible for preparation classes for the Portuguese Medical Board admission exams. In addition to her scientific and academic contributions, Dr. Ana Mafalda Abrantes has a keen interest in emergency medicine, with several courses in this domain. She is a role model in clinical practice changes in Portugal as an active member of the Choosing Wisely Program. She is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
