Since October 2018, Ricardo has been a hired junior researcher at CRIA-UC (Centre for Research in Anthropology, University of Coimbra) 2018. He explores the liaison between ethnography and art-based methodologies (mostly theatre) to test new tools and procedures for participant observation and action research suitable to apply in different contexts. He moves between anthropology, performance studies and theatre studies. Recently, he made an ethnography at a prison, testing the ethnotheatre methodology and studying inmates’ forms of hidden resistance to their living conditions, leading to the field of sociocultural impact of community-based performance. The area of specialisation has the following thematic lines: 1) Methodology: traditional and emerging methodologies within ethnography and performing art methodologies and languages, as a means to expand the possibilities of ethnography and as a way of monitoring, describing, analysing, learning and world-making, applying action research to social inclusion, empowerment and well-being. 2) Play study of performing arts manifestations as a way of (inter)acting in the academic, artistic and social world, understanding its mechanisms, scores and sub-scores, and its aesthetical and anthropological effects, exploring the points of contact between play in art and life. 3) Resistance: the forms and mechanism of resistance in social practices, in art and everyday life, between the public and private spheres, the visible and the invisible, as well as the conceptual and empirical development of marginality, taken as a form of resistance that dismantles the dominant power/resistance subaltern logic of living. He recently started teaching anthropology and art studies courses at the University of Coimbra (Graduation and Master’s degrees). He supervises PhD and Master’s thesis in art studies, being an arguer for PhD and Master’s degrees. He participated in scientific conferences, not neglecting contributions to scientific/artistic dissemination events. He is the author responsible for several national and international paper conferences, peer-review journals, chapters in books, specialised magazines, exhibitions, photographic editions, and theatrical performances. He participated as a curator at several scientific and artistic events, made an ethnographic film, and was on a film selection jury for the Portuguese Anthropology Association Congress. He won the Category I: scientific text - young anthropologist prize of the Portuguese Anthropology Association. He was two times an element of the evaluation committee of the applications for disciplinary arts intersections in the sustained support program (biannual and quadrennial) of the Portuguese General Directorate of Arts, Ministry of Culture (Dg Artes). He participated as a researcher and advisor for artistic projects and exhibitions. He co-founded a group of researchers and artists, baldio - performance studies. As artistic director, researcher-coordinator and performer since 1995, and held multiple theatre workshops and worked with directors and artists from different artistic languages, recently embarking on interdisciplinary performances, first at CITAC, then co-founder and creative director at projecto BUH!
