Sofia Pessanha obtained her PhD degree in Physics at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon in December 2013 and is an Assistant Researcher at the Physics Department of NOVA School of Science and Technology since 2020. She is an expert in Raman and X Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy and is a member of the Advisory Board of X Ray Spectrometry journal and Editor for X Ray Spectrometry in Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry. Her research focus lies in refining methodologies for determining biomarkers in human diseases and assessing the impact of environmental exposures on both biomarkers and human health. She has co-authored 100 scientific publications and presented over 35 communications in international conferences: she was invited speaker at the main conferences X ray Spectroscopy: European XRay Spectrometry conference (Belgium, 2022), Denver X-ray Conference (USA, 2018) and Latin American Conference of Analysis by X-ray Techniques (Chile, 2018 & Brazil, 2024). Her supervising/co-supervising duties include PhD and master theses in Biomedical and Physics Engineering.
