Raquel A Oliveira is an Associate Professor at Católica Medical School, Universidade Católica Portuguesa and vice-director of the Católica Biomedical Research Centre. Her research group aims to understand how mitotic chromosomes are assembled, how their structure impacts processes involving the DNA molecule (e.g. transcription), and how failures in these processes perturb mitotic fidelity, cell physiology and organism development. Raquel Oliveira's interest in Chromosome biology started during her PhD studies at IBMC-Univ. Porto (2007), under the supervision of Prof. Claudio E. Sunkel. She completed her PhD in 2007, awarded by Universidade de Coimbra Faculdade de Ciencias e Tecnologia, and previously a Licenciatura in Bioquimica - Especialização em Bioquímica Aplicada in 2002 by Universidade do Porto Faculdade de Ciências. She published over 30 publications in highly prestigious international journals (e.g. Nat Cell Biol, Science Advances, Plos Biology, Current Biology, Cell Reports, eLife). She holds over 1000 citations, with an average of 53 citations per publication (Google Scholar, research papers only). Since starting her independent group (2012), Raquel Oliveira has participated in several international and national conferences (2 as keynote speaker, 17 as an invited speaker /6 selected oral communications). She also (co)organised several highly prestigious international conferences (3 EMBO workshops, 1 EMBO Young Scientists Forum and 2 JEDI meetings), further underscoring her position as a leader in the field. Over her academic career, she consolidated a vast network of scientific acquaintances, including several past and present collaborations, numerous researchers she hosted at the IGC, and several invited seminars at various national and international institutes. She routinely reviews papers for the most prestigious journal in the field and participated as a panel member or external evaluator for various grant agencies. Raquel Oliveira also continuously teaches graduate courses: our in-house programme (Integrative Biology and Biomedicine); PGCD, a program dedicated to Portuguese-speaking African students 8http://www.igc.gulbenkian.pt/education/pgcd) and at the EMBO YIP PhD Course. Since 2012, Raquel Oliveira has attracted talented people to her team, acquired considerable supervision skills (5 PhD and 3 MSc degrees completed) and secured highly competitive funding (~4MEUR), including an ERC Starting Grant, an ERC Consolidator Grant, an EMBO Installation Grant and a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant. She was elected an EMBO member in 2022. CAREER BREAKS Raquel Oliveira was on maternity leave from October 2018-February 2019, followed by a reduced working-hours schedule until October 2019.
