Vera Geraldes, PhD in Medical Physiology, is a FCT post-doctoral research fellow in Cardiovascular Center of the University of Lisbon and assistant professor in Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, with thirteen years of experience in cardiology/autonomic nervous system research. Under this scope, she studied the effects of the excitability of sympato-excitatory central areas in the peripheral control of blood pressure, as well as in target organ damage observed in hypertension. She was able to show for the 1st time, the potential efficacy of central manipulation in maintaining blood pressure levels in essential hypertension in conscious SHR, suggesting that a decrease in neuronal activity in these central areas are an effective anti-hypertensive treatment strategy. This study resulted in 2 prizes and 6 papers in peer-review journals. She also described the mechanisms by which autonomic function interferes upon lead poisoning and how autonomic function can be remodelled non-invasively and without therapeutics to improve patients QoL. These studies resulted in 20 papers with peer-review Q1/Q2 (corresponding author: 8). In her professional activities, she interacted with 76 collaborators in co-authorship of scientific works and projects. As team member, she participated in 14 projects, including the SUDOE project ¿TEchnologies innovantes pour quantifier et qualifier le mode de vie pour des services de Médecine PersonnalISé¿ and currently in the H2020 project ¿NEurobehavioural predictiVE and peRsonalised Modelling of depressIve symptoms duriNg primary somatic Diseases with ICT- enabled self-management procedures¿. As principal investigator, she received a scientific research and technological development project grant for the TRACKING3C project (REF: PTDC/MEC-CAR/31626/2017; initiated in October 2018). Beyond her research experience, she is lecturer with 8 years of experience teaching courses on undergraduate and postgraduate levels in physiology. She also has been tutor and provided practical laboratory training to undergraduate and postgraduate national and international students. Regarding thesis supervision, in the last 5 years, she supervised 2 master thesis and is currently supervisor of 3 master and 2 PhD dissertations. In the last 5 years, she also integrated the organization of the European Federation of Autonomic Societies School. At present, she is member of the Spanish Society of Physiological Sciences Congress scientific committee.
