Maria João Ramalho obtained her PhD in Biological and Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto in 2019. Her thesis focused on the development of efficient nanocarriers to deliver drugs to the brain for the treatment of brain tumours. Her PhD thesis work was distinguished with a 20,000 euros prize (Maratona da Saúde Prizes 2019 - Cancer Research). MJ Ramalho also holds a BsC in Biochemistry (FCUP, 2012) and MsC degree in Biomedical Engineering (FEUP, 2014). MJ Ramalho is currently a Junior Researcher at LEPABE (Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy)/ALICE - Associate Laboratory for Innovation in Chemical Engineering, and a visiting researcher at i3S (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, University of Porto). In 2021, MJ Ramalho was awarded with a 6-year CEEC contract position atributed by a FCT international jury (4th editition of Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus). Her main areas of expertise are the design, optimization, characterization and in vitro and in vivo evaluation of nanoparticles for the encapsulation of bioactive compounds for several health applications. In last years, M J Ramalho has focused on the drug delivery to the brain for the treatment of brain disorders, such as brain tumours, mainly Glioblastoma Multiforme; and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer Disease. M J Ramalho also focus in drug-membrane interaction studies using in vitro models, and the role of those interactions on drugs' bioavailability and in vivo behaviour. Her research interests also include the exploitation of the benefic effects of natural compounds, and the enhancement of their properties by nanoencapsulation for food and therapeutic applications. She is successfully co-supervised 1 post-doctoral researcher, 10 master students (2 international) and 1 undergraduate student. MJ Ramalho (h-index 15) is the author of 28 papers in international journals, and 2 conference papers and 5 book chapters. Some of MJ Ramalho articles have been published in the Top 10% journals in the Scopus in category "Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics -Pharmaceutical Science". She co-editied two speciel issues for Pharmaceutics ("Alzheimer's Disease: An Update on Novel Therapeutics"; "Functional Polymeric Nanoparticles for Enhanced Cancer Therapy" ) and one for Polymers ("Polymeric Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications"). MJ Ramalho has presented her work in more than 25 international conferences (4 invited talks). MJ Ramalho has been involved in 10 financed research projects, and received 3 research grants from 3 funded projects and 1 FCT doctoral scholarship. MJ Ramalho is currently the co-PI of a FCT project funded in the 2021Call for SR&TD Project Grants in all Scientific Domains (EXPL/NAN-MAT/0209/2021). She is also team member of project funded in the M-ERA.NET Joint Call 2021(M-ERA-NET3/0001/2021). MJ Ramalho is co-founder of a patent (title: Process for preparing lipid nanoparticles based on matrix containing liquid and solid lipids to be used in drug delivery of levodopa and other active molecules to target the brain; Provisional patent application No. 118297). MJ Ramalho is currently member of the Reviewers Board of "Polymers" and "Pharmaceuticals" and a Topic Editor of "Pharmaceutics". MJ Ramalho also reviews articles for several other international journals. MJ Ramalho is member of the organizing committee of the symposium on Alzheimer's disease. MJ Ramalho is also part of the nanotechnology team from FEUP at Junior University of Porto.
