Meysam Khojasteh is an Auxiliary Researcher at the Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development (GECAD), Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Polytechnic of Porto. He works in the area of Power and Energy Systems, with a particular focus on electricity markets, smart grids, renewable energy resources, energy communities, and demand response. His research develops advanced optimization models—particularly adaptive robust, stochastic, chance-constrained, and bilevel approaches—to address uncertainty from renewables (e.g., PV and wind), demand variability, and market prices. These models support the efficient operation of local energy markets, peer-to-peer and community-based energy transactions, aggregator strategies, shared energy storage systems, and participation in day-ahead, intraday, balancing, and ancillary service markets (including energy, regulation, and reserve). He also contributes to resiliency analysis and hierarchical coordination between local resources and upper-level DSO/TSO markets. He has been actively involved in several national and international research projects, including the H2020 projects DOMINOES and TradeRES, as well as Portuguese-funded initiatives such as COLORS (Contextual Load Flexibility Remuneration Strategies), RETINA (Real-Time support Infrastructure and Energy management for Intelligent carbon-Neutral smArt cities), MAS-Society (Multi-Agent Systems Semantic Interoperability for simulation and decision support in complex energy systems), MAGRES (Machine learning for Automated Gathering of aggregated buildings Demand response for Renewables integration), and the Next Generation Storage (NGS) project under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (NextGenerationEU). In these projects, he has contributed to the development of market models, optimization frameworks for flexibility provision, and intelligent energy management solutions tailored to high-renewable energy systems. He actively contributes to GECAD’s strategic research lines on intelligent energy systems, market design, and the energy transition. His work bridges theoretical advancements in optimization under uncertainty with practical applications for energy communities and aggregators, supporting the shift toward more decentralized, flexible, and carbon-neutral power systems.
