Pedro Viana Baptista graduated from Faculdade Farmácia, UL in 1996. He then attained his PhD in Human Molecular Genetics from the School of Pharmacy, University of London (2000), after which he started at FCT, UNL as Assistant Professor of Molecular Genetics. This was when he entered CIGMH and created the Nanotheranostics Group focused on gold nanoparticles functionalized with ssDNA oligos for gene expression studies via a non-cross-linking detection approach. This non-cross-linking mechanism is a pivotal model and strategy within the group and has since been applied for the evaluation of expression of cancer related genes and for detection and characterization of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (for Tuberculosis management, including identification of molecular signatures of antibiotic resistance). Nowadays, the Group has moved towards therapeutics - Nanomedicine@FCT – and is part of UCIBIO (Research Unit in Biomolecular Sciences). PVB is now Full Professor of Life Sciences - Molecular Genetics & Nanomedicine at Dept Life Sciences, FCT, UNL and coordinates the Nanomedicine Group focused on biofunctionalization of nanoparticles with targeting and silencing moieties and their application in drug delivery and/or gene silencing, in the assessment of toxicology of nanoparticles in in vivo models, in the development of nanobiosensors and microfluidic devices for diagnostic applications, and DNA/RNA biomolecular recognition studies. At the intersection of Molecular Genetics and Nanotechnology, we have focused our research on the use of noble metal nanoparticles (mainly gold and silver) for new diagnostics and therapeutics platforms PVB has been involved in more than 22 national and European projects, publishing 13 book chapters, >190 papers in high-impact, multidisciplinary international journals), and several patents. PVB has been an Expert evaluator for International Research Projects and Networks in Nanomedicine/Nanobiotechnology. PVB has been post-doc adviser of more than 9 young Post-doc researchers, supervised 15 PhD students and >24 MSc students. In 2012 he won the Prize of Scientific Merit - Prémio Santander-Totta / Universidade Nova Lisboa due to its research on Gold Nanoprobe-Based Non-Crosslinking Hybridization for TB Molecular Diagnostics. He is co-founder of a nanodiagnostics Startup Nano4 Global Lda. PVB is member of the Scientific Council of FCT-NOVA. PVB is Head of Department of Life Sciences PVB is President of the Ethics Committee of FCT-NOVA
