Pedro Reis Costa holds the position of Principal Researcher at the Portuguese Institute of Ocean and Atmosphere (IPMA) and is an Integrated Member of the Centre of Marine Sciences of the Algarve (CCMAR). He earned his degree in Marine Biology from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon in 2000 and subsequently completed his Ph.D. in Biology & Ecology at the same institution in 2006. With a robust academic background, Pedro's research is centered on harmful algal blooms (HAB) and their impacts on the marine environment. His expertise encompasses the following key areas: 1) Exposure Modeling and Kinetics: to comprehend the exposure of shellfish and planktivorous fish populations to marine toxins in their natural habitat, developing models that elucidate the kinetics of biotoxins. These models prove invaluable in predicting potential toxic effects on marine fauna when integrated with forecasting models of toxic blooms; 2) Toxin Partitioning and Transport Mechanisms: to investigate the processes of HAB toxins in the water column and their transport mechanisms during different phases of algal blooms. 3) Ecological Impacts of HAB Toxins: examination of ecological impacts resulting from HAB toxins on interactions among organisms in both pelagic and benthic environments. 4) Kinetic and Toxicity Studies: development of kinetic and toxicity studies of HAB toxins in shellfish and finfish. His research contributes significantly to our understanding of the potential risks associated with these toxins; 5) Toxicological Effects: to investigate the toxicological effects of marine toxins, delving into enzymatic metabolism induction and oxidative stress. This aspect of his research adds a crucial dimension to comprehending the broader impact of HAB toxins. He coordinated and/or participated in more than 15 research projects either national or European (p. ex. Eurocigua, AAGORA, Blueshellfish, Matisse, Cigua, Morebivalves). His work has contributed to the publication of over 80 scientific articles (including reviews) and 4 book chapters, and achieved h-index score of 25 (Scopus). The researcher supervises/supervised (as main supervisor and co-supervisor) 4 doctoral projects (3 completed) and 5 master's projects.
