Sara Baptista da Silva, is currently an Internal Doctoral Researcher at the Centro de Biotecnologia e Quimica Fina (CBQF), at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP). Her academic journey began in 2007 with a degree in Microbiology at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, UCP. An area that always sparked her interest, motivation, and curiosity. To deepen her scientific knowledge, she followed a master's degree in Applied Microbiology at the same institution. Where she could finish her thesis in 2009, on hospital multi-resistant strains with the final classification of 18 values. A new vision emerged with the recognition of advanced bio-based drug delivery systems for infectious and degenerative processes, with particular concern for the circular economy and sustainability. In this way, and at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, Sara finished her PhD funded by FCT in 2015, in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a specialty in Pharmaceutical Technology. An academic degree that she ended with a Distinction level, in bio-based nano-systems for the treatment of degenerative eye diseases, linked to diabetes. In the conquest of new scientific domains that could add value and innovation to those already explored, Sara starts the Post-Doctoral Plan funded by the FCT, where she proposes to study new biomaterials functionalized with nano/microsystems for the disinfection and healing of diabetic wounds. Always using green technologies and by-products, an up-value to industrial by-products. Despite these main career projects, she could participate and learn with multidisciplinary teams within the scope of more than 10 projects (which represented a total investment of approx. 10M), related to health. Projects that unified different academic and industrial institutions, highlighting the intrinsic and ongoing partnership with the University of Porto and with the University of Pernambuco (Brazil). The mobility mission at the University of Pernambuco, allowed her to give seminars and to be the main examiner of Doctoral theses. Sara is the inventor and co-inventor of 2 patents, author/co-author of ca. 33 publications (articles in international journals and book chapters), most in Q1, and is the corresponding author of most of the leading papers. Moreover, Sara gave more than 30 communications (poster and oral) at international conferences. She supervised 3 MSc Thesis, and 1 ongoing MSc Thesis, awarded in 2023 with the FULBRIGHT prize (by Fulbright American Association), and over 35 undergraduate/graduated MSc final projects. Serving as a jury member, she evaluated 1 PhD, 3 Master's theses, and 4 PhD doctoral plans. Sara is an Editorial Board Member of Frontiers in Pharmacology, a member of 6 impact scientific associations, and worked on the organizing committee and as a scientific consultant. She associates her R&D passion with a plural and entrepreneurial spirit, which allowed her in 2011, to be co-founder of Blendera®, an R&D project which received a merit award in 2012 by COHiTEC program (Porto Business School - UP), supported by COTEC Portugal. In 2015, she worked in the Technology Transfer Office of the University of Porto Innovation (UPIN), by UPINTECH program. She was vice-chair and elected chair of the first American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists in Portugal (2010-2012). Nowadays, Sara is an enthusiastic researcher, who received a CBQF-UCP Merit Award in 2021-2023 by boosting the Biomedical Area, and by embracing new challenges in the areas of clinical microbiology, micro/nanotechnology, and advanced biomaterials for multi-biomedical applications, with a particular focus on natural and sustainable materials.
