Eduardo J. Gudiña received his degree in Biological Sciences in 2001 at University of León (Spain). From 2002 to 2006 he was a PhD student at the Institute of Biotechnology of León (INBIOTEC), under supervision of Prof. Juan Francisco Martín Martín. He obtained a PhD fellowship from the Ministry of Education of the Government of Spain. For about five years he got familiar with techniques on the molecular biology of yeasts and filamentous fungi, and all the basic techniques of biochemistry and molecular genetics. He developed a research work on the molecular basis of the biosynthesis of astaxanthin in the yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous. The main topics of his PhD dissertation included the isolation and characterization of genes involved in the biosynthesis of astaxanthin in yeasts, as well as their manipulation to create over-producing strains. From 2007, he is a Post Doctoral Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB), a highly competitive International Research Unit located at University of Minho (Braga, Portugal). CEB was awarded with the grade of Excellent by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal) since 2002, as a member of IBB - Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering, or as an independent Centre since 2015. He works in several projects related with the application of biosurfactants in different areas (e.g. biomedicine, bioremediation). His research activities include the isolation and study of biosurfactant-producing microorganisms; optimization of biosurfactant and bioemulsifier production using agro-industrial by-products; characterization of different biosurfactant and bioemulsifier molecules. He exhibits expertise in microbiology and molecular biology techniques, bioprocess engineering and fermentation technology. To date, Eduardo J. Gudiña has published 46 papers (20 as first or corresponding author) in international peer reviewed journals, of which 28 are in journals with an impact factor over 4.8 and in the first quarter (Q1), according to the Journal Citations Report® (Clarivate Analytics, July 2023). His publications accumulate 3108 citations, holding an h-index of 27 according to Scopus [data retrieved in 08.04.2024]. Moreover, he has published 3 papers in international conferences, 10 book chapters, and several posters and communications in national and international scientific meetings.
