I have completed my PhD in Evolutionary Biology in 2004 at the University of Lisbon. Between 2004 and 2012 I was awarded two postdoctoral scholarships (SFRH/BPD/12723/2003; SFRH/BPD/36021/2007) shared between UC Berkeley (with Professor Craig Moritz) and CIBIO (within the Conservation Genetics group). I used this time to develop my research competence and skills in using population genetics to understand i) intraspecific admixture and introgression in vertebrates, ii) the evolutionary history of populations and species, and iii) demographic processes of population with low effective size. In 2012 I was awarded a FCT Starting Research contract (IF/00564/2012) to develop independent research work. By then, I started delineating my current research interests of using genomics to understand the role of interspecific introgression in adaptive processes to live in extreme settings, including i) highly human-dominated landscapes, ii) environmental extremes (deserts), and iii) biological extremes (long-stands in dramatic bottlenecks). In 2018 I established my Research Group at CIBIO, the EcoGenomics, where I currently join talented researchers (3) and postgraduate students (8) sharing my research interests and developing work grounded in an international network with prestigious institutions in Europe, USA and Africa. I currently own a FCT Principal Researcher contract (2022.07926.CEECIND), and I am an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Porto, and Invited Full Professor at the University of Johannesburg. I published >110 articles in SCI journals, including high-ranking journals such as Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Nature Ecology and Evolution, Current Biology, Genome Research and Biological Reviews. I supervise(d) or co-supervise(d) 12 PhD and 28 MSc students (national and foreign). I am(was) the Principal investigator or co-PI in 11 projects and a team member in 36 projects funded by national and international entities. Between 2017 and 2023 I have been a member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and member of IUCN Canid Specialist Group since 2015. My commitment in knowledge transfer across my research path resulted in molecular tools offered publicly at CIBIO that attract wide international visibility from wildlife practitioners and game breeders aiming at real-time conservation and monitoring of illusive, threatened and game species. I have always been involved in different outreach activities including public science communication initiatives, interviews in broad-audience channels (newspapers and radio, national and international), dissemination of results in popular science publications, engagement at the annual students¿ fair at University of Porto, among many others.
