João Paulo André, who earned his PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland, currently serves as an assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry of University of Minho, Portugal. He has supervised three PhD students and four MSc students in the field of medicinal inorganic chemistry and has been a member of national and international academic juries for PhD theses. Until 2017, he had published 30 papers in international scientific journals indexed in Scopus, along with a chapter in a book and an entry in an encyclopedia on NMR (Springer). He contributed to the 3rd edition of Dictionary of Eça de Queiroz (INCM) in 2015, with an entry titled 'Chemistry and Pharmacy'. Since then, he has furthered his work in science outreach and the history of science. His endeavors, focused on exploring the relations of science with music, art, and literature, have garnered national and international attention. He has been interviewed by journals and magazines such as The Boston Globe, The Scientist, Chemiextra (Switzerland) and Ciência Hoje (Brasil), and invited to deliver lectures in international reunions, including the Annual Meeting of The American Chemical Society in San Francisco in 2016. In 2017, he conducted research at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, in Philadelphia. The following year, he published Poções e Paixões - Química e Ópera (Gradiva), a book that explores the connections between chemistry and opera. It saw a second edition in 2019, was included in the National Reading List (Plano Nacional de Leitura) and was produced in braille and audio format by the National Library of Portugal. The book has inspired an opera concert performed in several Portuguese cities and a collaboration with an artist under the auspices of the National Theater D. Maria II (https://www.tndm.pt/pt/atividades/open-lab-stages-y-o-som-da-ciencia/.) He also participated in Joseph Lynch's film Friedrich Accum - A Pioneer in the Fight against Food Adulteration (https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=MR0VUwkSeMk), which was nominated for the Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards in 2021 in the categories of Non-Fiction Long Form and Editor (https://rockymountainemmy.org/emmy-awards/emmy-awards-archives/2021-emmy-awards-nominees-and-recipients/). His most recent book, Irmãs de Prometeu - A Química no Feminino (Gradiva, 2022), explores the history of science, focusing on the women who contributed to the development of chemistry. The Portuguese magazine Ler considered this work one of the 100 books of the year. Additionally, an English edition in two volumes titled Sisters of Prometheus will be released in 2024 by Springer. João Paulo André served as the editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ) from 2013 to 2016. Currently, he is a member of the commission of the Group of History of Chemistry of SPQ. He remains actively involved in science dissemination by giving talks in schools, participating in juries and radio programs, and writing a fortnightly column on science and culture in a national newspaper (https://sol.sapo.pt/autor/joao-paulo-andre/).
