Ana Rita Barros Figueira earned her PhD in classical studies with the thesis entitled Iconography of Achilles: Theatricality, rhetoric and communication in Greek pottery in the VI and V BC, under the supervision of Professor José Pedro Serra. She has a degree in linguistics, and gained a master's degree with the dissertation titled King Priam by Michael Tippett: Epic, tragedy and forgiveness, under the supervision of the same scholar. She is the author of several papers and book chapters where she develops an interdisciplinary hermeneutics through an aesthetic angle, combining language and figurations. Her approach to material cultural, more particularly to Greek figured vases, contributed with revisions of key concepts such as kairos, ekphrasis and mimesis, and has set parameters to the examination of ancient medicine, philosophy and epic poetry, principally Homer. Her research examines central notions discussed by Heidegger, namely that of techne and homologia, thus refreshing existing views on one of the most prominent thinkers of the twentieth century while placing classical studies and hermeneutical and phenomenological philosophy at the core of how we think the human being. Her doctoral project won the program for Doctoral Scholarships of the University of Lisbon (2015), and her research's extensive dataset and high potential for reuse was worthy of a scholarship awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and for Technology (SFRH/BD129577/2017). In 2022, the Foundation Vasco Vieira de Almeida distinguished her research with the prize Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida (ex-aequo), in the area of philosophy, will be published by the Lisbon University Press.
