Bárbara Guerra-Carvalho completed her bachelor's degree in Biochemistry at the University of Coimbra in 2018. She was top of her class, with an average score of 18 out of 20 values. For her excellent results, she was awarded the 3% Best Students Award for academic merit by the University of Coimbra, in the academic year 2017/2018. Her bachelor's degree project was entitled "The effects of metformin in the mitophagy, mitochondrial function and metabolism of C2C12 myoblasts", supervised by Professor Rui A. Carvalho, Ph.D. and Professor Anabela P. Rolo, Ph.D. Since then, Guerra-Carvalho had enrolled in several scientific projects and advanced courses. She completed a Statistical Data Analysis course at the University of Coimbra with an average score of 17 out of 20 values. She also completed 5 different courses concerning ART training in Human Assisted Reproduction lectured by the Cleveland Clinic, one of the best Fertility Clinics worldwide, with an average score of 84% out of 100%. Guerra-Carvalho started her research career in 2016, as a research trainee at the Mitochondrial Toxicology and Experimental Therapeutics (MitoXT) Group, supervised by Professor Paulo J. Oliveira, Ph.D. at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), UC-Biotech. In 2017, she joined the Metabolic Profiling research group at the University of Coimbra, supervised by Professor Rui. A Carvalho, Ph.D. In 2020, she was awarded a research grant to work on the project "Spermboost: Improving Sperm Preparation and Cryopreservation for Assisted Reproductive Technologies" and joined the Sertoli Cell and Gamete Biology group at UMIB-ICBAS, University of Porto, supervised by Doctor Marco G. Alves, Ph.D., and Professor Pedro F. Oliveira, Ph.D. During these years, Guerra-Carvalho specialized in metabolomics, namely in the techniques of Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-NMR) and Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) applied for human spermatozoa and Sertoli cells metabolomics. In 2022, she was awarded a 4-year PhD Studentship by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) to develop the project "SpermOMICS - A multi-omics approach on male reproductive ageing", under the supervision of Professor Pedro F. Oliveira, Ph.D., Professor Pedro Domingues, Ph.D., and Professor Alberto Barros, Ph.D, MD. She is also proficient in human semen analysis and several molecular biology techniques, including Western Blot, mitochondrial function analysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress-related biomarkers analysis. During her short but productive scientific career, Guerra-Carvalho published 12 articles (4 as first author) in international peer-reviewed journals. Guerra-Carvalho also published a book chapter and 22 conference resumes in scientific journals. She was also an author/co-author of 22 posters and 6 oral communications in national and international scientific conferences. Since the beginning of the bachelor's degree, Guerra-Carvalho exhibited a high proactivity for event organization with 8 organization/co-organization of scientific-related events. Her work received 8 awards, including 5 travel grants for participating in international scientific conferences, 1 best oral communication, 1 best poster communication and an honourable mention for a poster communication.
