Diogo Santos has been working at CEFT (Transport Phenomena Research Center) laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal, since 2019, when he joined the European project UniRCell team, under a research grant, until the end of 2020. The objective was optimizing the preparation of catalytic membranes for fuel cell applications. Then he continued working in the sustainable energy research area supported by a post-doctoral grant from the ACE (AIRBORNE CLEAN ENERGY SYSTEMS) project, with the main objective of developing a fully operational fuel cell stack (300 W net power) to be incorporated in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Currently, he is working in the ARX project as a doctoral researcher still focused on developing complete fuel cell systems for UAV applications. This working experience followed his studies in 2015-2019, to complete his PhD degree at FEUP with a dissertation in Chemical and Biological Engineering, focused on the development of macro-structured catalysts for environmental applications (removal of organic compounds from liquid effluents and abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in gaseous effluents). These studies were carried out at the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM (Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials), funded by a PhD scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). During this period he also worked in the Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Chemistry of San Sebastián of Pais Vasco University, Spain, for 4 months, preparing metallic monolithic catalysts for VOC oxidation. These efforts lead to 6 publications in international peer-review journals, as well as 7 oral and 6 poster communications. He completed his Master degree in Environmental Engineering (final grade of 16 out of 20) in 2014 at FEUP, with a thesis in the field of Treatment of Agro-Industrial Effluents by Advanced Oxidation Processes. This was the result of a join collaboration between the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM and the company Adventech, under the scope of the European project (FREECATS) dealing with the preparation, characterization and evaluation of metal-free carbon materials for environmental catalytic applications, which was when he started to develop competences in the synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of advanced materials for sustainable applications in the field of catalysis.
