My research focuses on studying the niche and identifying the most important processes that drive the coexistence and diversity of biological communities. I have focused primarily on plants, but have also explored patterns of coexistence and diversity in other organisms, including insects and terrestrial mammals. In addition, I also study the importance of diversity in ecosystem functions including carbon fluxes. I have a wide range of technical skills. I started working on observational studies in which I applied various statistical methods including regression techniques, structural equation modeling and species distribution modeling. During my thesis I analyzed the importance of top-down (regional to local) and bottom-up (local to regional) effects and proposed ways to incorporate these effects into general theoretical frameworks. This is a key issue necessary to establish the factors that enable the maintenance of diversity. During my postdoctoral contract at the University of South Bohemia, I developed an experimental perspective that has given me a broader view on the topic and a way to study the impact of local biotic interactions and intraspecific variability for biodiversity at larger scales. In addition, I have recently become interested in the importance of evolution in biodiversity patterns. I am currently working on integrating experimental and observational approaches to study biodiversity across scales and analyze how biodiversity affects ecosystem functions such as carbon flux. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) I have participated in 8 competitive research projects. I am coordinating an international project (DeWood, 250.000 €) in collaboration with Romanian researchers. I have participated in seven national projects and I have been PI in two of them, SoilSkin funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and SCENIC funded by the Spanish Research Agency (141,000). In addition, I have been PI of a non-competitive project to develop a protocol to establish biological cover in urban landscapes funded by the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya and the UAM Foundation (20.587 €). I have spent more than 3 years in high quality institutions in four different countries (UK, USA, Portugal and Czech Republic). Of these, I spent 4.5 months at the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences on a non-competitive postdoctoral research contract and 2 years at the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic on a competitive postdoctoral contract. I am also committed to the dissemination of my research results, I have contributed to more than 46 communications at national and international conferences. In 2015 I received the award for the best student presentation at the International Association of Bryologists (IAB) conference held in Chile. I participated in the organization and gave an invited talk at the international conference Joint Meeting of the British Ecological Society and the Sociedad Española Briología in 2016. I have acted as a reviewer for 29 papers and have also had editorial responsibilities. I was Editorial Assistant at Frontiers of Biogeography between 2017 and 2019 and I am Associate Editor of Cryptogamie, Bryologie since 2019. I have participated in the evaluation of R&D projects for an international project of the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT) in 2019 and I am acting as a reviewer for the AEI Knowledge Generation Projects 2021. Finally, I have a solid teaching background with more than 600 hours of teaching in four different subjects and extensive experience in supervising students. I have supervised 14 undergraduate and two master's students in the last 10 years, and I am currently supervising three PhD students in three different Spanish universities.
