I obtained my degree in Applied Biology at the University of Minho in 2004, and in 2010 I obtained my European PhD in Materials with Technological Interest at the University of Valladolid, Spain, under the BioPolySurf (MRTN-CT-2004-005516) Marie Curie Research Training Network about the “Functionality development in systems based on elastin-like recombinamers: from nano-objects to macrogels”. During my PhD, I have applied several synthetic biology tools for the bioproduction of elastin-like polymers for biomedical and nanotechnological applications. During my PhD, I also worked with in vitro culture of mammal cells and in biomaterials characterization. Between 2010 and 2018 I was a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T) (2010-2012) and at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) focused on the development of protein-based formulations for cosmetic, textile, and biomedical applications. In 2018, I was awarded a contract as a junior researcher (Decreto Lei nº57/2017) and in 2021, I was awarded a contract as an assistant researcher at CEB under the CEEC- Individual – 4th Edition. My research activities have been focused on the (i) design, expression, and purification of fusion proteins for the development of advanced cosmetic formulations; (ii) application of proteins, recombinant fusion proteins, and formulations to modify textile surfaces; (iii) development of encapsulation systems for biomedical, cosmetic and textile applications; (iv) modification of enzymes for biotechnological and biomedical applications; (v) biological characterization of natural products, drugs, and nanoformulations using in vitro cultures of human cells; and (vi) in the design and development of protein-based scaffolds for tissue engineering. I have (co)-authored 65 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, with a total of 1276 citations according to Scopus (Scopus Author ID: 55971701500) and a h-index of 19 (Scopus). I am also a co-author of two book chapters published in international books. Since my graduation, I have been presenting my work in conferences including 27 oral and 28 poster presentations. I was also invited to give 23 oral presentations at conferences, advanced courses, and scientific actions. My contribution to technological development and intellectual property (IP) protection resulted in 2 international patents and 1 Spanish patent. During the last years of research activity, I was involved in several national and European projects as a team member, working and publishing in collaboration with several European partners. Lately, I assured the supervision of 14 master's students and 2 PhD students, and I am supervising 2 PhD students and 4 master's students. Additionally, I participated in outreach activities to disseminate communication and interaction with society. In addition, I assumed lecturing activities as an invited assistant professor. Recently, I was awarded with the Diploma de mérito de publicação científica em 2021 – Diplomas e Prémios de Reconhecimento da Presidência da EEUM. I was also awarded as a member of the EARLY Project - PhagE towARds initiaL amYloide-beta - North edition of the BfK INNOV@Rise program promoted by the National Innovation Agency (ANI).
