Joel P. Arrais is Associate Professor at University of Coimbra and researcher at the Laboratory of Artificial Neural Networks (LARN), integrated within CISUC (Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra), a research unit rated “Excellent” by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). His research lies at the intersection between computation and the life sciences, with a scientific agenda structured around three main pillars: AI-driven molecular discovery and design, multi-omics integration and computational genomics, and the development of foundation and generative models for biomedical data. Has advanced innovative methodologies through major projects such as D4 (Deep Drug Discovery and Deployment), IA4Farma, and CHAFT. Joel P. Arrais has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized venues, including Nature Communications, Journal of Cheminformatics, and Briefings in Bioinformatics, reflecting both the quality and impact of his scientific contributions. He has also supervised 10 doctoral projects, demonstrating a strong commitment to advanced research training and scientific leadership. To ensure that computational advances translate into experimental validation and real-world impact, he maintains strategic collaborations with leading partners, including CNC-UC, ITQB NOVA, and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery at Macao Polytechnic University. His profile is further strengthened by his active leadership in national and international initiatives, including funded projects supported by FCT and the European Union. He also serves as President of the General Assembly of Biodata.pt, the Portuguese node of the ELIXIR research infrastructure.
