Luís Estronca is a researcher with a robust background at the interface of Biological Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of aging and the development of high-fidelity in vitro platforms to study cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Estronca possesses advanced experience using microfluidic devices to mimetically recreate the vascular microenvironment. Through his work at the Advanced Therapies Group (CIBB/CNC-UC), he has specialized in the differentiation of induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) into different types of vascular cells which enables the creation of patient-specific vascular cell models, essential for investigating how genetic predisposition and cellular senescence influence blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and the inflammatory response following an ischemic event. With extensive experience in aging-focused european projects (e.g., RESETageing, CHAngeing), his work focuses on the molecular characterization of cellular senescence markers and the inflammatory profile of the SASP.
