I am currently a contracted researcher at the Centro de Investigação e Recursos Genéticos da Universidade do Porto (DL57/2016/CP1440/CT0008). I have a degree in Applied Biology from University of Minho, a Master in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources from Univesity of Porto and a PhD in Biodiversity, Genetic and Evolution also from University of Porto (supervised by Dr. José Carlos Brito) co-hosted by University of Montpellier, France (supervised by Dr. Rachid Cheddadi). At the Paleoenvironment Group of the University of Montpellier, I developed my expertise on climate change analyses, focusing on climate reconstruction with paleopalynology data. My post-doctoral grant was co-hosted by Institut de Biologia Evolutiva at Barcelona, Spain where I started my ongoing collaboration on Arabian biodiversity research with Dr. Salvador Carranza, focusing on drivers of diversity. Having a multidisciplinary scientific background, extending from spatial ecology and climate change to the multiple levels of biodiversity organization (genetic, species, and ecosystem), my research is dedicated to bridge scientific domains with the purpose of advancing current knowledge on the drivers of current biodiversity patterns and with a strong focus in conservation. I'm interested on the multiple scales of biodiversity organization. These include, at a continental to global scale, the study of the drivers of biodiversity patterns and their relation with climate change, and at local to regional scales, the study of the connectivity between populations and effects of the landscape features. I have developed technical skills allowing to pursue my research goals. These include high level programming with multiple languages (Python, R, Bash, JavaScript), particularly focused on big data analyses from spatial and genetic data sets and data visualization. I have experience with genetic and genomic data manipulation and analyses but also with Earth observation data, particularly with MODIS Terra/Aqua and Sentinel 1/2 imagery. I have authored more than 50 publications in internationally distributed peer reviewed journals (mostly Q1 in their respective domains) and 3 book chapters. I supervised 2 master students and 2 undergraduate trainees (one ongoing) and I'm currently supervising 1 doctorate student. I have engaged on student training with the organization and lecturing in 4 different advanced courses for the BIODIV doctoral program since 2015. I developed multiple software in line with my research interests (2 R-packages, 3 QGIS plugins, multiple scripts for automation of specific tasks) and of general interest. All are freely available at my personal repository (https://github.com/ptarroso).
