Eleonora Aronica is a Neuropathologist (Neurologist) with both clinical and fundamental scientific research experience, and Full Professor of Neuropathology at the University of Amsterdam. She completed her MD and Neurology residency at the University of Catania (Italy). After receiving a doctorate from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) she moved to the USA, where she had research associated appointments in Albany and New York. Subsequently, she moved to The Netherlands and joined the Department of Neuropathology of Academic Medical Center at UvA (AMC-UvA), where she completed the Neuropathology residence program. In 2012, she was appointed Professor of the Pathology of the Nervous System at the UvA, Faculty of Science, and in 2016 she was appointed Full Professor of Neuropathology at AMC-UvA. Her research covers different research lines, including neuro-oncology, neurodegenerative disorders, developmental disorders, and epilepsy and is embedded within national and international collaborative research networks. She leads a research group focused on Translational Research into Epilepsy. Her scientific honours include the Michael Prize (2011) for the best scientific and clinical research in the field of epilepsy. She published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles and several chapters for books. She participated in 15 European consortia and international networks (e.g. FP7, Horizon 2020). Being involved in various task forces of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), she contributed to ILAE guidelines and actively participated in roundtables discussions of patient advocacy and provider organizations to improve research dissemination and implementation in the direction of a more patient-centred care. Her research group focuses on understanding the pathogenesis, epileptogenesis and pharmacoresistance of focal chronic epilepsy, as well as featuring translational aspects. The aim is to find an effective treatment for patients with epilepsy by mapping biological and molecular signalling pathways that contribute towards the development and progression of epilepsy and associated comorbidity. The use of human brain tissue represents a crucial strategy for the research group to advance our understanding of the underlying neuropathology and the molecular and cellular basis of epilepsy and related cognitive and behavioural comorbidities. The research group is also involved in developing an integrated clinical-pathological-genetic classification system for developmental brain disorders integrated diagnostic approach will be implemented in the field of neuropathology. Her research group is embedded within the department of Neuropathology of Amsterdam UMC, cooperating closely with research groups within the Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms research programme of Amsterdam Neuroscience (Amsterdam UMC; SILS-CNS) and with research groups from other university medical centres and Stichting Epilepsie Instellingen Nederland (SEIN) and closely connected with patient organisations.
