Irma Cascão, PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of the Azores (UAz), is a contracted Junior Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences - Okeanos, UAz. In 1998, she began her career as a Researcher at the Natural Reserve of the Sado Estuary (RNES) in the scope of the Cetacean Monitoring Project. Since 2005, she has been working at the Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group (Okeanos/IMAR - Institute of Marine Research, UAz), participated in several research projects, specializing in hydroacoustics, passive acoustic monitoring and cetaceans' bioacoustics. She has devoted herself to investigating the role of seamounts/open ocean in regulating cetacean-prey interactions, using active (scientific echosounders) and passive (hydrophones) acoustic techniques. Recently, she has focused on studying the impact of underwater noise on marine ecosystems, and simultaneously, collaborating with colleagues from the University of Algarve in the development of a noise model for the Azores to estimate and map the level of anthropogenic noise.
