Anabela Paula has a degree in Biology from Aveiro University since 2006 and holds a master's degree in Ecology, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management from the same institution, concluded in 2007. In 2022, she started a PhD in Sustainable Forest Management at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of Coimbra University, under the theme "Ecosystem services’ trade-offs in fire-smart territories: defining Nature-based solutions through a multi-actor approach". Her first research experience was in 2004 during the final degree project at Alcalá de Henares University (Spain), where using participatory methodologies, the Ecological Monitoring Plan for the Natural Park of Sierra y Cañones de Guara was proposed. Then, her master's thesis, "Wild rabbit monitoring in Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve (1998-2007)", was done under the project "Recovering the Iberian Lynx Ecosystem through Species and Habitat Management". Later on, with the DaVinci program, she worked again in Spain, at Doñana Biological Station, in the Recovery Iberian Lynx populations project. In 2007, she joined Bioinsight - Looking Deep into Nature, working until April 2021 as a project manager. In the first eight years, she mainly worked with Offset Projects, involving the local community (hunters, herders) in the implementation of management measures to mitigate the residual impact of power lines and wind farms on birds of prey (Bonelli's eagle, golden eagle, hunter harrier), black stork, red-billed chough etc.). Under this research theme, she also worked on the R&D project "Wind and Biodiversity" with Aveiro University. Between 2015 and 2017, she worked in the Mozambican subsidiary, being responsible for numerous projects related to the Strategic Environmental Assessment, Multi-sectorial and Special Land Management Plan of the Zambezi Valley, Adaptation Strategies to Climate Vulnerability in 2 Conservation Areas, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Management Plans; Assessment, management and monitoring of High Conservation Values; Environmental Social Impact Assessment and implementation of Ecological Monitoring programs, among others. After 2017, she started to work in other countries (Colombia, México and Turkey), mostly with bird and bat monitoring and designing mitigation strategies for critical wind farms. During this period, she also worked in Portugal, especially in Bird Hazard Management Plans for Airports, Iberian wolf monitoring, environmental education and awareness. In May 2021, she joined the Centre for Functional Ecology at Coimbra University, where she has been working with Ecosystem Services, mostly on CULTIVAR: Network for sustainable development and innovation in the agro-food sector. She has also contributed to the projects F4F - FOREST for FUTURE: PP6 MyForest and Biosphere Reserves: sustainable territories, Resilient Communities, mainly as a participatory workshop facilitator. She is also the researcher responsible for the pilot areas in the Malcata area in two European projects: "BENCHMARKS - Building a European Network for the Characterisation and Harmonisation of Monitoring Approaches for Research and Knowledge on Soils" and "PHOENIX - The Rise of Citizens' Voices for a Greener Europe". The PHOENIX project is a cross-border pilot area covering the Portuguese Malcata and Gata Mountain in Spain.
