Pedro Faria, PhD (UTAD - University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro, 2016) is Auxiliary Researcher at GECAD (Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development), Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP/P.Porto). His research interest regard power and energy systems with focus on demand response programs and buildings. The current work addresses renewable-based distributed generation, energy storage, and electric vehicles. He also works in real-time simulation of power and energy systems, namely using the OPAL-RT platform and Hardware In the Loop (HIL). He has coordinated 5 workpackages in international projects, GECAD team in 5 research projects (2 European - MAST and PROSECO - and 3 national - COLORS, NETEFICITY, and NGS-BP12) and had scientific management and coordination responsibilities in 15 projects. He is the PI of COLORS, an FCT project resulting from a call with international jury, with success rate lower than 7%. He notably contributed with models and their implementation, testing, demonstration, and piloting in more than 30 national and international research projects. He has been awarded two FCT funded individual research contracts to work in GECAD in very competitive calls with international juries: PostDoc in 2019 (only 6 positions, 150+ applicants) and Auxiliary researcher in 2021 (ranked 1st at national level for the respective area, 150+ applicants). Since 2015 he coordinates GECAD team on Real-time Simulation with Hardware-in-the-loop. Currently this team has 12 people (2 senior doctorate researchers, 2 Postdoc; 2 PhD, 2 MSc, 4 undergraduate students). It started with 1 Phd, 2 MSc, and 4 undergraduate students. Since 2018 he coordinates a team working on Machine Learning and Optimization for PES with focus on Demand Response (DR). The team has 6 people (2 postdoc; 2 PhD, 2 MSc students). In 2018 it started with 1 PhD and 2 MSc students. Pedro supervised 2 concluded PhD theses and has 1 ongoing PhD. He concluded the supervision of 15 MSc, 11 undergraduate, and 4 Erasmus students. Pedro tutored 5PhD and 10+ MSc students in international projects and coordinated activities of 20+ visiting researchers (Brazil, Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain) in the scope of his international collaborations. He has supported the work of students in 10+ universities, from Europe, Brazil and United States. Overall, Pedro had impact on the training and career development of 100+ researchers, in the scope of different MSc and PhD programs and funded projects. Pedro is author of 3 European Patents and of more than 300 scientific papers, 85 of them in SCI journals. He has the following indicators in Google Scholar, Scopus and WoS: 5780/3964/2565 citations, H-index 32/27/21, and 110/82/43 i10. Pedro has a consolidated extensive international collaboration network , with 10+ countries and 30+ partners, and relevant scientific activity at the international level. He has been invited to provide talks and to participate in panel sessions in 10+ international conferences and organized/co-organized more than 10 scientific events. He has relevant participation several international conference scientific committees being frequently invited to chair sessions and panels. He has relevant activities in several IEEE PES WGs, being Secretary of the IEEE PES Working group (WG) on Intelligent Data Mining Analysis. In sequence of his activities in this WG, Pedro is co-funder of the IEEE Taskforce on Open Datasets. Pedro is ISEP representative in the Technical Commission for Electrical Normalization CTE 21, that deals with standards for batteries and accumulators. He is also Deputy representative of P.Porto at the CRUSOE network, which is the network of universities of the Europe southeast. Since 2017 he teaches “Intelligent Systems” and “Energy Markets” in ISEP MSc program on PES. He taught PhD courses on AI and DR, adopted by 4 international universities PhD programs for a Marie-Curie doctoral network.
