Inês Sousa is Head of Intelligent Systems and Senior Scientist at Fraunhofer Portugal. She has been researching on machine learning, signal processing and time series analysis for ambulatory monitoring of the elderly and chronic patients, specifically focusing on human motion analysis based on inertial sensors since 2013. In the Intelligent Systems Department, she leads a team of more than 30 researchers, who investigate ways in which technology can augment human potential in interpreting vast amounts of data, identifying patterns, anticipating events, and supporting decisions. Inês Sousa holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Lisbon. Her thesis on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain using quantitative methods was developed at Siemens Healthcare Portugal and distinguished with the António Xavier Award. Additionally, she has been a visiting researcher at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, invited lecturer and research intern at Philips Research Europe. She is currently the International Project Coordinator for AISym4MED, in which she spearheads efforts to develop a platform that facilitates access to trustworthy healthcare datasets augmented with controlled data synthesis. She is currently Principal Investigator (PI), co-PI or technical leader, in over 10 funded research projects totaling a budget of more than 2.5M euros. She has collaborated with National and International researchers, healthcare providers and companies, producing several functional prototypes and 17 peer-reviewed scientific journal publications. Moreover, she guided the research work conducing to 6 MSc and 2 PhD degrees. Ines has been also involved in the Focus Group AI for Health lead by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)/World Health Organization (WHO), aiming to establish a standardized assessment framework for the evaluation of AI-based methods for health, diagnosis, triage, or treatment decisions.
