Joana Maia Moreira Dias has a Degree in Environmental Engineering (Catholic University of Portugal - Biotechnology College), an MSc in Land Reclamation and Restoration (Cranfield University, England) and a PhD in Environmental Engineering since 2010 (Faculty of Engineering of Oporto University - FEUP). She was the Director of the Integrated Master in Environmental Engineering at FEUP from 2019 to 2021, being actually the director of Bachelor and Master Environmental Engineering courses at FEUP, Associate Professor at the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department - FEUP-DEMM and Senior Researcher at the Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy - LEPABE at the Environmental Sciences and Technologies group in the research topic of Clean Technologies and Waste Recycling, being also researcher at the new Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering (ALiCE-FEUP). She also participates at the Collaborative Laboratory on Circular Economy (eCOLab) being also responsible for a continuous education course on Circular Economy at FEUP. Taking into account the evaluation of the pedagogical activities she has been attributed three pedagogic incentive awards at FEUP. She has an H-Index of 21 with 2806 citations from 2542 documents (scopus) and presents more than 90 publications, including chapters in books, articles in international indexed (IF) journals and conference proceedings, having supervised more than 50MSc Thesis, with 3 PhD thesis supervised completed and 1 PhD thesis in supervision underway on the fields of waste management and renewable energy production, in straight collaboration with several companies and with international links. She was guest editor of the catalysts journal (IF 3.465) "Catalysis in Biofuels Production" issue. Main scientific interests include: (1) Sustainable feedstocks and processes for bioenergy production, with focus on biodiesel; (2) Analysis and Improvement of Waste Management and Urban Cleansing Systems and Practices; (3) Recovery of low cost materials through enzymatic processes; (4) Recycling of metal bearing wastes; (5) Recycling of rubber and plastics; (6) Municipal Waste Management and Refuse Derived Fuel. In 2012 she was attributed an honorable mention associated with the supervision of a work related with the recovery of metals from waste printed circuit boards. She is the FEUP representative in important working groups and clusters related to waste management namely: (1) Work Groups of "Incorporation of Recycled Plastic" and "Recycling & 100% Recyclable" for Portuguese Plastics Pact; (2) "Work Group to the study of Refuse Derived Fuels" and "Work Group to study Food Waste Prevention" for SMART WASTE PORTUGAL Business Development Network; (3) Working group for "Regulation on the use of waste and recycled natural and artificial aggregates for geotechnical applications" for the Portuguese Environmental Geotechnics Commission; and (4) STAKEHOLDER in the "INTHERWASTE- Interregional Environmental Integration of Waste Management in Europe Heritage Cities" (INTERREG EUROPE). She has participated in several funded research projects on waste management / recovery and biofuels production, from which the following recent examples are highlighted: (1) Study on the definition of minimum rates of incorporation of recycled materials in packaging, financed by APA and DGAE; (2) Education for Sustainable Development at FEUP, financed by FEUP; (3) Continental AA's Factory of the Future, financed by AICEP; (4) Study on the Implementation of Cleaning Indicators at Oporto Municipality financed by Municipal Company PortoAmbiente; (5) Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Single Use versus Reusable Packaging, financed by Association "APED -Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Distribuição"; and, (6) Biodiesel production from vegetable oils using heterogeneous catalysts, financed by Programa de Promoción de la Universidad Argentina.
