Stefani Domentean has a BSc degree in Biochemistry (2017-2020) and a MSc in Molecular Genetics and Biomedicine (2020-2022) at NOVA School of Science and Technology. During her internships, Stefani Domentean acquired bases in immunology and learned how to implement diagnostic assays for immunodeficient patients at the Primary Immunodeficiency and Immunology Lab (NOVA Medical School, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa), under the supervision of Professor Catarina Gregório Martins. These diagnostic assays are crucial to aid diagnosis and prognosis, monitor patient's evolution and study their response to different therapeutic options. Later, she was involved in the study of the processes underlying the onset of prediabetes and diabetes in the MEtabolic DIseases Research (MEDIR) group (CEDOC), under the supervision of Doctor Paula Macedo. The goal was to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms behind these metabolic diseases by studying the classical target tissues of insulin action, as well as other targets (e.g., brain). Stefani Domentean developed her final BSc project on HER2 positive breast cancer at the Molecular and Experimental Pathology Laboratory (Fundação Champalimaud) under the supervision of Doctor Mireia Castillo-Martin. In this project, she studied the association between protein levels and gene status of the HER2 at the cellular level with the aim to better understand and improve the selection criteria for combination therapy in these patients. Stefani Domentean developed her MSc thesis at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil (IPOLFG) under the supervision of Doctor Cristina Albuquerque within the scope of a COST action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) CA17118: Identifying Biomarkers Through Translational Research for Prevention and Stratification of Colorectal Cancer (TRANSCOLONCAN). This study led to the identification of inherited genetic variants underlying susceptibility for early onset colorectal cancer; the association of a previously identified molecular signature with the development of synchronous metastases with different tumor characteristics; and the validation of a synchronous metastases signature previously identified as a biomarker for disease monitoring in liquid biopsies. Results from this translational MSc project may contribute for a better diagnosis and follow-up of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and will be published soon. Stefani Domentean is currently a PhD student at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), working in the Brain Cancer Dynamics and Therapy Translational Lab led by Professor Claudia Faria. This lab is fully dedicated to the translational study of brain tumors and metastatic processes aiming to contribute for a better prognosis and to develop innovative therapies. Stefani Domentean has been developing a research project entitled "UBE2C as a prognostic marker and therapeutic target in patients with breast cancer brain metastases", funded by the program Gilead Génese, as well as her PhD project entitled "Exploiting UBE2C as a new prognostic marker and therapeutic target in brain metastases", funded by FCT. Stefani Domentean participated in the CONGENTO Course on Laboratory Animal Science with a personal license (Procedures) from Direção Geral de Veterinária. Stefani Domentean has participated in different organization committees , seminars covering different multidisciplinary topics, and various workshops on oncology. She also engages in Science Outreach activities, participating with the Brain Tumor Team (BTT) in running events, to create awareness and to fundraise for brain cancer research.
