João Rodrigues earned his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Lisbon University in 1999, which included a four-month stint at the Technical University of Denmark. He began his academic career at the University of Madeira (UMa) in 1997, where he is currently a Full Professor in Materials Chemistry and Nanosciences, responsible for general chemistry, inorganic/organometallic chemistry, nanochemistry, and nanomaterials. Since November 2006, he has served as the Head and Scientific Coordinator of CQM-Centro de Química da Madeira/Madeira Chemistry Research Centre, being re-elected every two years since then (last re-election: January 2025). CQM is a National Research Unit (FCT - UID674 and is evaluated as EXCELLENT), supported by the Portuguese National Science Foundation/FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, and it comprises 65 researchers from various countries (http://cqm.uma.pt). At CQM, he leads the Molecular Materials Research Group, conducting research on dendritic (hyperbranched) polymers, metallic nanoparticles, nanofibers, and carbon materials for their application as bionanomaterials. He has been the principal investigator or a member of numerous national and international research projects and scientific networks. As PI, he has managed a budget exceeding 12.3 million euros. He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals, primarily in Q1 (h-index = 42, i10-index = 91), alongside six book chapters and 19 proceeding papers. Since 2022, he has co-led the China-Portugal Joint Laboratory in Innovative Nanomedicine. Additionally, he is the Director of the Master in Nanochemistry and Nanomaterials and a former member of the Academic Senate (May 2021) and the General Council of the University of Madeira (November 2020). He served as President of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the Portuguese Chemistry Society from 2003 to 2005. He was previously a member of the National Committee celebrating the International Year of Chemistry 2011. In June 2018, he joined the Steering Committee of the Portugal-China Joint Innovation Centre for Advanced Materials (PCJICAM). As a testament to the strong collaborative ties established with several Chinese universities, he was appointed on June 29, 2017, as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering/Center for Nano Energy Materials at Northwestern Polytechnical University (a Class A university and a member of Project 985 and Project 211) in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, China, serving until December 22, 2022. He was also one of the founding members of the International Dendritic and Hyperbranched Polymer Application Innovation Center, sponsored by Weihai CY Dendrimer Technology Co., Ltd., China.
