Ana Alexandre is a marine biologist with expertise in seagrass ecophysiology. She obtained a Degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries in 2001, a Master degree in Coastal and Marine Studies in 2004, and a PhD in Marine Sciences in 2011 at the University of Algarve, Portugal. Since then, she has established collaborative work with other European and non-European research teams to develop studies in diversified topics such as environmental monitoring and management, restoration of seagrass habitats, ecosystem metabolism, anthropogenic impacts (clam harvesting, nutrient inputs and ocean acidification), ecology of invasive macroalgae, sexual reproduction and nitrogen metabolism of seagrasses. She delivered innovative research on the importance of organic nitrogen in seagrass systems, the effects of ocean warming on the nutritional strategy of seagrasses, and explored the dynamics of nutrient competition between seagrasses and seaweeds. She is currently focused on the evaluation of emissions of greenhouse gases by vegetated coastal habitats and the impacts of global change on these emissions. She holds a significant record of scientific publications (first author in 70 %; 744 citations, H-index 14), and obtained funding as PI for three projects on seagrass ecology. She is a guest reviewer at Frontiers in Marine Science, and also contributes as a reviewer for other marine science journals. She is activey involved in student training as supervisor of MSc and PhD thesis, and in science dissemination actions.
