Graduated in Biology in 2000 from the University of Lisbon and obtained his PhD in Conservation Biology in the same University in 2010, defending the thesis entitled “Systematics, biology and conservation of Unio tumidiformis Castro, 1885 (Unionidae: Bivalvia) in the South-West of the Iberian Peninsula”. His main research interest is in aquatic organisms, in particular mollusks, their life cycles, ecology and conservation. Has participated in numerous research projects and worked as an environmental consultant for several companies during the past 20 years: he coordinated the execution of the project to develop and publish a freshwater bivalve Atlas from Portugal from the Portuguese national institute for nature conservation, coordinated the action for Captive rearing of freshwater mussels in the LIFE NATURE project LIFE10 NAT/PT/000073 "ECOTONE - "Management of riparian habitats towards the conservation of endangered invertebrates", and participated in several I&D projects in competitive calls, being currently the IP for the project MUSSELFLOW PTDC/BIA-EVL/29199/2017 “Host-dependent evolution, ecology and conservation of freshwater mussels under varying hydrological conditions: consequences of climate change” and mollusk coordinator for the Red Book of Invertebrates from Portugal. As a consultant, he evaluated the impacts of several large-scale hydroelectric schemes in the moluscan fauna, developed the proposals for associated monitoring actions and compensation measures and coordinated their implementation, including a plan to prevent the invasion of Portuguese waters by the Zebra mussel. He has worked in collaboration with international teams in several countries, participating in projects and freshwater sampling campaigns in the USA, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium and Morocco, and marine sampling campaigns in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Cape Verde and Mozambique. He is since 2009 president of the Portuguese Institute of Malacology, and currently is a research associate of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre – in the University of Lisbon.
