He has a licentiateship degree (5 years course) in Physics Engineering (branch of Instrumentation) from the Physics Department of the University of Coimbra (1991), a M.Sc. degree (2 years course with thesis in Virtual Instrumentation) in Technological Physics (area of Nuclear and Medical Instrumentation) from the Physics Department of the University of Coimbra (1994), and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (area of Robotics and Automation with thesis in Force Control for Industrial Robotics) from the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra (1999) with supervision by Professor José Sá da Costa (Technical University of Lisbon) and most of the research work done abroad (namely in Italy - Naples and Sweden - Lund). He did post-doc in Automatic Control (1999-2000, Lund, Sweden) and was in several universities as guest scientist. He is the author of several hundred scientific and technical papers (in the area of robotics and automation) published in prestigious journals and conferences, 3 robotics books in English edited by Springer-Nature (another one just about to be released in the area of additive-manufacturing from the same editor), 3 robotics and automation books in Portuguese - one from 2012 with 5 editions and another 2 books released in 2018 and 2019, respectively, all edited by LIDEL-, several chapters in books in robotics related areas, more than 1000 technical and science awareness/spreading articles, editor-in-chief of the Robotics Magazine (the only Portuguese Robotics magazine), member of the editorial and scientific board of several international scientific journals, etc. It has a regular presence in the media with opinion columns in national newspapers, but also a regular presence in television and radio programs. He also hosts (and hosted in the past) a few TV and radio shows on science and technology, but also on national policies related with education, innovation, entrepreneurship in university courses, etc. He was the founder and first President Elected of the Portuguese Robotics Society (2006-2008), President the Portuguese Association for Automatic Control (2010-2012), President of the Regional Coordination and Development Committee of the Center Region of Portugal - equivalent to Presidente of Regional Government – (2012), President of the Investment Committee JESSICA Holding Fund Portugal - from the European Investment Bank – (2012), member of the National Council of Science and Technology - nominated by the Portuguese Prime-Minister – (2011-2012), member of the National Council of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, among other positions - nominated by the Portuguese Prime-Minister – (2011-2012). In mid-2007 he assumed the Presidency of the Board of Directors of iParque, Science and Technology Park of Coimbra, a position he held until the end of 2011, in charge of a small but very dedicated team, with which he planned, obtained financing and built this important space for startups and locate businesses in Coimbra. The medium- and long-term strategy was based on the quality of the space, on the VINCI (business center) and TESLA (business accelerator) buildings, on a strong link to the University of Coimbra and on a very efficient collection of services design to attract investment and locate knowledge-based business initiatives. He is currently Associate Professor with “Agregação” (habilitation) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra.
