Filipe Oliveira-Brás (FOB) graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Aveiro in 2021. During his undergraduate studies, he achieved excellent results in multiple fields, including cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, mathematics, and informatics, with a final grade of 18/20 (ECTS classification: A). His final report focused on synthesizing and characterizing mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with resveratrol for the treatment of melanoma. This nanomedicine project was conducted at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, one of Portugal’s leading research units in (bio)materials science and nanotechnology. Moreover, he collaborated with the Associated Laboratory CESAM to evaluate the therapeutic effects of this nanoformulation on melanoma cell lines. He continued working in this project as a volunteer from November 2022 to May 2023, as part of CICECO Young Scientist Program. During this period, FOB pursued a master’s degree in Biochemistry, specializing in Clinical Biochemistry, at the same university, where he completed the degree in December 2023 with a final grade of 19/20 (ECTS classification: A). This specialization deepened this understanding of the biochemical mechanisms underlying various pathological conditions, leading him to focus his master’s thesis on metabolic changes in skeletal muscle wasting associated with type 2 diabetes. His research was conducted at the LAQV-REQUIMTE research unit, where he gained expertise in handling biological samples and developed strong experience in various laboratory techniques, such as Western Blotting, enzymatic activity determination and 1H-NMR. FOB actively participated in scientific conferences and workshops throughout his academic journey. Notably, he participated in the “Metabolic Map Contest” (2021) and presented his research twice in the “Poster Contest” (2022, 2023) during the “Biochemistry Day” scientific conference. In 2022, he received the Best Poster award for his study on obesity-induced oxidative stress in hepatocytes. Beyond academics, FOB was an active member of the Núcleo de Estudantes de Química da Associação Académica da Universidade de Aveiro from 2022 to 2023, initially as a member of the Pedagogy and Entrepreneurship sector and later as vice-coordinator. In these roles, he organized pedagogical events, workshops and seminars for biochemistry, chemistry and biotechnology students. His involvement in this student association allowed him to enhance his skills in project management, science communication, teamwork, and leadership. Since April 2024, FOB has been collaborating on the REGENERAR as master’s fellow (expecting end date: May 2025) at the Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology (CNC) at the University of Coimbra. He also had the opportunity to present his work at the Poster session of the RNA Horizons 2024 - Therapeutics Symposium "Unlocking the RNA's Potential in Medicine" scientific symphosium. Additionally, he has a strong command of the English language (Cambridge B1 European level in 2015) and a basic understanding of the Spanish language.
