Patricia Pitrez concluded her MSc in Biological Engineering from Univ. of Minho (Portugal) in collaboration with Novo Nordisk (Denmark) in 2009. Her work contributed to the development of a strategy to monitor glucose and lactate concentrations in mammalian cell cultures using mid-infrared spectroscopy. In 2010, she enrolled the competitive MIT-Portugal Doctoral Program (the average success rate is around 20%) as a Ph.D. student with the project "Bioengineering Platforms to Modulate the Activity of Smooth Muscle Cells Derived from Progeria-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells" developed at Univ. of Minho. Her work contributed to the identification of a molecular target in vascular aging and the results have been internationally patented and published in 6 research papers. Her Ph.D. work also inspired the project ERA@UC, Enhancing Research in Aging at the Univ. of Coimbra, awarded to her Ph.D. co-supervisor, Prof. Ferreira (2.5M ¿). She finished her Ph.D. with the highest distinction. Since 2016, she is a post-doctoral researcher at CIBB, Univ. Coimbra, developing a research area that combines aging with bioengineering (micro-and nanotechnologies) to develop new treatments for biological aging. She has supervised or tutored 16 researchers: (i) 5 Ph.D. students, (ii) 5 MSc students, (iii) 3 BSc students, and (iv) 4 MSc fellows, being the Ph.D. projects in collaboration with Dr. Jurk and Dr. Passos (Mayo Clinic, USA), Dr. Ori (Leibniz Institute on Aging, Germany), Dr. Bernardo (The Francis Crick Institute, UK), Dr. De Sandre-Giovannoli (Aix Marseille Univ, France) and Dr. Nissan (iStem, France). Since 2018, she is a lecturer in the Master program of Biomedical Engineering (Univ. of Coimbra) in the syllabus entitled "Regenerative Medicine". Since November 2020, she was an invited post-doctoral fellow at the Univ. of Niigata, in the laboratory of Dr. Minamino, with a Canon Foundation award attracted competitively. Indeed, she has been very pro-active in attracting competitive national/international funding. She is a Principal Investigator of an FCT project, and she is/was a research member of 5 projects (total >5.5M€), all related to the aging field. She published 1 book chapter and 12 peer-reviewed papers in high-impact journals (including Nat Comms, PNAS, Small, Nanoscale Horizons) and an average IF of 8. Recently, she published at the prestigious Nat Comms journal and the work has been highlighted by the national press and TV. She has been enthusiastic to attend highly-recognized scientific meetings, with 17 oral and 10 poster presentations. She co-organized 8 scientific events and co-chaired 2 session international conferences. Currently, she is focused on the development of new senotherapeutic platforms for vascular senescent cells to decisively contribute to positioning CIBB and Univ. of Coimbra at an internationally competitive level in this field.
