Joana Vieira Barbosa graduated in Chemical Engineering in 2005 and completed her PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering in 2013, both from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP). JV Barbosa was awarded with a FCT PhD grant on the "Development of monomers for production of high performance paints". After her PhD completion, she had 2 post-doctoral grants at Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE) entitled "Phytochemical compounds of natural origin: an alternative to increasing antibiotic resistance" and "Studies on compounds of natural origin: essential oils and amino derivatives of sesquiterpene lactones and their applicability", which allowed her to obtain and develop new skills, namely, in chromatographic separation techniques. Between 2016 and 2019, JV Barbosa developed studies in natural-based composites and the synthesis and characterisation of polymeric materials, having acquired a combination of skills on materials characterisation methods. Simultaneously, she was also a team member of MICROPROTECT ("Use of encapsulated essential oils for protection of stored cereals and legumes", PTDC/AGR/119270/2010). Within the scope of this project, she is a co-author of one patent in two domains (“Device for stored products protection and uses thereof” - US 2018/0310556 A1, 2018 and WO 2017/072563 Al, 2017). Also, as part of this project, she was team leader, in the 1st edition of Business Ignition Programme (BIP), a business model iteration program for technologies and scientific projects developed in academia, having been awarded with the 3rd prize. She also led the project CROPEO-Essential Food Protection (BIP-PRROF, U. Porto Inovação). In 2019, she changed her main research area to the impact of air quality on public health, specifically focused on the atmospheric emissions from shipping and in the health impact of the exposure to atmospheric pollution, as a researcher in EMISSHIP project ("Towards reducing atmospheric emissions from shipping - Forecasting and assessing human health impact", https://emisship.fe.up.pt/). Between 2021-2023, she was a Junior Researcher in ArRISCO - "Firefighters occupational exposure to air pollution impact on COPD and asthma" (https://arrisco.fe.up.pt/) at LEPABE. Currently she is a Researcher at LEPABE on Air Quality area, developing studies on the quantification, identification and characterization of particles constituents in the indoor air of primary schools and nurseries, as well as potential impact on health. JV Barbosa is the first author of nine articles in SCI journals, mostly in journals with Q1 rank (7/9), of one book chapter (with ISBN), and is a co-inventor in two international patents (US 2018/0310556 A1 and WO 2017/072563 Al) and in two articles in SCI journals (Q1). She has 19 publications in international and national conference proceedings (4 oral and 13 poster) and was invited for 3 oral presentations. Regarding teaching and mentoring experience: i) she taught Organic Chemistry I (QOI), in Chemical Engineering (CE) at FEUP (2022-2024); ii) she co-supervised 5 MSc thesis (4 in CE;1 in Bioengineering); iii) she supervised 3 research fellows in CE; iv) teaching activities in QOI, in the Integrated Master in CE at FEUP (2013-2019); v) she was jury member at FEUP Project in Environmental Engineering in FEUP; vi) mentored MSc students, namely in the characterisation of polymeric materials; and vii) she participated in scientific events organization. Since the completion of her PhD, she has been coordinating R&D activities and has been responsible for managing the projects in which she has been involved, having acquired communication and project management skills.
