João P. C. Tomé is Associate Professor (2016) with Habilitation (2022) at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon, where he has been teaching several classes, including Organic Chemistry II and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, at the Department of Chemical Engineering. He graduated in chemistry from the University of Aveiro (1996), where he also received his PhD (2001) working on porphyrin chemistry, under the supervision of Prof. José Cavaleiro and Prof. Graça Neves. Following postdoctoral appointments at the Aveiro and CUNY universities, he returned to Aveiro in 2008 as Auxiliary Researcher under the FCT Science programme. In 2012, he was awarded with a Development Grant from the FCT Investigator Programme. During this period, he was distinguished with some grants and prizes, such as the Dow Portugal Prize (Portugal) and a K12 Clinical & Translational Research Training Scholars Award from the NIH (USA). He has published over 200 papers, 7 book chapters and issued 3 patents. He already delivered over 46 invited lectures and over 62 other oral communications. Has been co-author of more than 250 poster communications in several national and international scientific meetings. He has also been organizing, co-organizing and member of the organization of several meetings and symposiums. Tomé's research interests include the synthesis of porphyrins and phthalocyanines with appropriate structural, photophysical and photochemical properties, mainly for: molecular-targeted cancer photodynamic therapy, microorganisms photodynamic inactivation, optical (chemo)sensors, (photo)catalysis and photoinduced energy-transfer and electron-transfer materials. For that, he has been establishing an international network with several colleagues in these fields. Prof. Tomé has been involved in many national, bilateral and international Projects and Grants, being PI of some of them. He and his team members have been awarded with several fellowships form the Portuguese National Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and others. Currently his group has 4 Ph.D. and 1 Master students. He already supervised or co-supervised 13 PhD, 19 Master and several BSc students. Between many other activities, he has been referee for several European National Foundations, not only for grant proposal evaluations, but also to evaluate fellowship applications. He is editorial board member of 3 journals (Catalysts, Sensors and Current Organic Synthesis), has organized 4 invited issues, and has been referee for many journal.
