Fredrik Westerlund is a Professor at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering in Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. He coordinates as PI several R&D projects including an ERC consolidator grant of 2 million eur about next-generation nanofluidic devices. He published 123 articles in journals, including three invited reviews. Cited ~3600 times. H-index = 34 (Google Scholar) and >30 conference contributions (2002-2021). His lab focuses on using nanofluidic tools for studying single DNA molecules. The applications for this methodology ranges from fundamental studies of DNA-protein interactions to optical DNA mapping. The latter is of particular importance in the Antimicrobial Resistance context, where a methodology to analyze bacterial plasmids using optical DNA mapping has been developed and implemented. This method can analyze, in a single experiment the number of plasmids in a sample, their sizes, on which plasmid a particular gene is located and also creates a barcode of the plasmid. This barcode can be used to identify plasmids in sequence databases or to trace plasmids between bacteria and patients, for example during an outbreak.
