Olfa Zarrouk (OZ) is an Adjunct Professor at Escola Superior Agrária de Santarém (Polytechnic University of Santarém), responsible for the areas of Viticulture and Pomology since January 2025. She graduated as an Agronomic Engineer from Institut National Agronomique de Tunisie (INAT-TUNISIA) in 2001 and earned a PhD in Agricultural, Forest, and Nutrition Systems from the University of Lleida in Spain in 2006. In 2007, she moved to Portugal to join Manuela Chaves' group, where she trained in Plant Molecular Ecophysiology as a postdoctoral fellow. Later, as a Junior Researcher at ITQB (2007-2020), she led her own research line from the outset. In 2020, she joined Smart Farm COLAB (SFCOLAB) to coordinate the Smart Control & Monitoring Team. In 2023, she moved to IRTA Torre Marimon (Barcelona, Spain) as a permanent researcher responsible for the area of Viticulture, aiming to conduct research on Grapevine Ecophysiology under climate change. OZ has developed a solid and internationally recognized research line on grapevine water/heat stress molecular ecophysiology and adaptation trait regulation, collaborating with top grapevine scientists at both national and international levels. With extensive experience in the agricultural sector across multiple countries, her research provides valuable insights into agronomic challenges in Mediterranean Agriculture. Over the years, OZ has secured approximately €3.3M in competitive funding, including three grants (two national and one international) at SFCOLAB (DIH, PRR, and Interreg); €240k from a competitive national grant (FCT 2018-2022) as Co-PI at ITQB and €1M from a competetive national grant (Generalitat de Catalunya 2024-2028) at IRTA. She has authored 26 peer-reviewed papers (8 as senior author in top plant journals), accumulating over 2,500 citations (h-index 17, Google Scholar). Nearly all of her publications (except three) are in Q1 journals within their respective fields (Plant Sciences, Agronomy, and Horticulture), with high impact factors (>4) and high citation counts (five papers with 100–850 citations and ten with 20–100 citations). Additionally, she has authored four book chapters, including one as a corresponding author. OZ serves on scientific and editorial boards, has reviewed proposals for several funding agencies (e.g., ANR, ANEP, Estonian Research Council), and has reviewed manuscripts for over 15 reputed journals. She has delivered 30 talks (five invited), mainly at international conferences, and has served as a guest editor for three special issues in MDPI Plants, MDPI Sustainability, and Frontiers in Plant Science. In terms of academic supervision, OZ has hosted and supervised three PhD students, four Erasmus+ Master’s students, six Master’s students, and eight undergraduate students. She has co-organized one international scientific symposium, a science education workshop, and four brokerage events for industry. As an external examiner, she has evaluated nine PhD theses (five international) and has reviewed six PhD dissertations. She has also been an invited professor for Plant Biotechnology modules in two national and one international Master’s program (Viticulture) at Instituto Superior de Agronomia (University of Lisbon, Portugal), as well as a Plant Biology module at FCT NOVA (University NOVA Lisboa, Portugal). Her research career was interrupted twice for maternity leave (2011 and 2016). OZ is deeply engaged at both national and European levels, enabling her to build a strong research network. She is actively involved as a task leader in the COST Action CA21142 – FruitCREWS and participates in the Portuguese node of the European Plant Phenotyping Platform (EMPHASIS). Beyond her scientific endeavors, OZ has been actively involved in science communication and outreach, serving as an organizer, participant, or mentor for various initiatives such as Fascination of Plants Day, Open Days, the Ciência Viva program, and ERASMUS+, among others.
