João Pitrez completed his Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering in 2022/02 at Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Coimbra (ISEC), and he is now finishing the last year of the Master's degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering at ISEC since 2021/10, with a first-year average grade of 15 out of 20. During the last year of the Master's degree, J. Pitrez was invited to teach laboratory classes of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to 1st year students of the Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering. During his Bachelor's degree, J. Pitrez participated in the Erasmus+ program for 1 semester at the Lodz University of Technology, Poland, where he attended the Biotechnology course. After that semester, he then took part in the Erasmus+/ICM program and did his curricular internship at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia. The topic of his project was "Extraction of Bioactive Compounds of Plant Origin", more precisely, extraction of phenolic compounds from cork by-products, where during the project he performed several techniques such as Soxhlet extraction, for the extraction of the phenolic compounds, or HPLC for the analysis of such compounds. During his degree, J. Pitrez had several courses ranging from general engineering courses, like Thermodynamics, Physics, and Fluid Mechanics (finished with 15 out of 20), to specific biology and chemistry courses, like Cellular Biology (15 out of 20), and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (13 out of 20). He also had mixed courses that incorporate engineering with chemistry and biology, such as Applications of Biological Technics (14 out of 20), where the different properties and effects of multiple bioreactors were tested with different cell cultures, Bioprocesses Engineering (16 out of 20), and one of the most important courses for the project he is working on, Biomaterials (19 out of 20). The majority of these courses were accompanied by a strong laboratory component. Currently, J. Pitrez is doing his Master's thesis with the topic of "Targeted senolytic delivery system to treat liver cirrhosis", a project in the interface of biomaterials engineering and biology. During his project, he already synthesized nanoparticles to load senolytic drugs to target senescent cells. For the synthesis of the nanoformulations and the physico-chemical characterization he has used techniques such as NMR spectroscopy (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering), and Zeta potential analysis. Moreover, J. Pitrez has already experience with cell culture, mainly endothelial cells.
