I am an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University since February 2024. Over the past five years, I held an individual PhD Research contract (IF/00819/2015), followed by Assistant Professor (2020–2024), and was awarded a highly competitive CEEC contract (2020.00148.CEECIND) by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. I currently serve on the Coordinating Committee of the MSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics and co-coordinate the BioSys2 PhD program. I also represent FCUL in RedeAgro and CNOIV’s viticulture experts panel, contributing to science-based policymaking for the wine sector. Between 2020 and 2023, I was an invited member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences’ Young Scientists Seminar, helping promote science communication. In 2019, I founded the GPS Lab, addressing a gap at FCUL in the field of plant-pathogen interactions. Using grapevine as a model, our lab applies a multidisciplinary approach—integrating OMICs, big data, biochemistry, functional genomics, and biotechnology—to improve crop resistance. We’ve hosted over 25 students and raised over €1M in funding over five years. Since 2020, I’ve supervised 11 PhD students (6 completed), 11 MSc (10 completed), and several national/international internships. Two Post-Docs in our team are funded through CEEC. Since 2020, I participated in 11 national and international projects, 4 as PI or Co-PI. In the EU projects REVINE (PRIMA) and S4G (HORIZON), I coordinated the Portuguese teams. In REVINE, we pioneered the use of marine PGPB to enhance grapevine resilience to heatwaves, gaining media coverage by BBC News and Ça m’Intéresse. In S4G, we lead on multi-OMICs and grapevine immunity, leveraging our deep expertise. My scientific career is built upon a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, leading to groundbreaking insights into plant-pathogen interactions. This is evident in 79 peer-reviewed articles (49 between 2020 and 2024) achieving over 2334 citations (h=24 Scopus; h=28 Google Scholar). Following Scopus Author Metrics to provide further insight into my scholarly impact, over the past 10 years, most of the documents were published in Q1 journals, and 56% of my publications were either as first or last author, 41.5% of the articles were co-authored by international researchers and 1.5% were co-authored by non-academic authors. Thirty-three documents (50.8%) were in the top 25% of the most cited documents and 71.9% of the documents were published in journals ranking in the top 25% based on CiteScore. Further indicators of international peer recognition, include the roles of Associated Editor for BMC Plant Biology and Scientific Reports. Also, recognition from my peers is patent in the invitations to act as manuscript reviewer (over 30 indexed journals, 41 manuscripts in the last five years, e.g. Nature Communications), as project evaluator (ANID-Chile, Chez Science Foundation and Swiss National Science Foundation), as a jury in PhD and MSc Thesis, as a member of the scientific committee in international conferences (4) and as a keynote speaker (1). Between 2020–2024, my research yielded key insights into grapevine immunity regarding downy mildew. We identified immune-enhancing metabolites, novel lipid regulators of plant immunity, and a marine diatom-derived priming lipid molecule with biotechnological potential. Our discoveries align with EU goals like the Zero Pollution Action Plan, the Green Deal, and Sea to Farm. We also pioneered the role of proteases in woody plants and uncovered grapevine symbionts that reduce pesticide needs, supporting the Nature Restoration Law. Our work was recognized with two Distinction and one Innovation award from CNOIV. My collaborative research also engages industry stakeholders, including Esporão and AVIPE, facilitating knowledge transfer in viticulture. I’ve participated in panels such as one by the Porto Protocol Foundation, and led outreach initiatives via national media and science events.
