João Alpedrinha

I received a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Oxford in 2012, studying social evolution theory and sex allocation, under the supervision of Prof. Stuart West and Dr. Andy Gardner. During this time, I developed analytical models for the study of the evolution and maintenance of eusociality, spite and sex allocation conflict in polyembryonic wasps, sex allocation of the malaria parasite considering drug therapeutical strategies targeting differential sex survival and fertility and how budding dispersal affects sex allocation. Following a short post-doctoral position at the University of Western Ontario, I returned to Portugal to work with Dr. Isabel Gordo at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science, studying evolutionary dynamics using Fisher’s Geometric Model with varying levels of pleiotropy. Since 2015, develop my work in Prof. Sara Magalhães’ research team, working in the evolution of mating strategies in spider mites. Having worked in different laboratories and countries, I have developed a vast network of collaborators from other national and international groups. From my research, I have authored 13 scientific articles (5 as 1st author) and reviewed articles for 15 top scientific journals. In parallel with my scientific work, I participated and developed various educational and outreach activities: mentor of undergraduate students, demonstrator of several undergraduate courses, lecturer and developer of workshops for high school teachers, participation in various festivals and exhibitions and the development of the science outreach blog “O Beagle de Darwin” for the Portuguese Association for Evolutionary Biology (APBE). I am also part of the organizing committee of Caravana AgroEcológica, a project that promotes the cooperation and dissemination of knowledge between researchers, agriculture producers and consumers, for the benefit of agroecological practices.
