Lígia R. Rodrigues is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at University of Minho (UM, Portugal), Vice Dean of the School of Engineering, President of the Pedagogical Council of the School of Engineering, and Associate Director of the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB). She was the Head of the Department of Biological Engineering (2018-2022) and the Vice-Director of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Section of Ordem dos Engenheiros (Portuguese Institution of Engineers) (2018-2022). She received her degree in Biological Engineering in 1997, her M.Sc. in Bioprocess Engineering in 2001, her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering in 2005 and her Habilitation in 2017 from the University of Minho. In 2006/2007 she was a post-doctoral research fellow at the three different universities (UM; IPATIMUP, University of Porto; University of Lund). In 2007, she joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Engineering (DEB) at UM as an invited assistant professor under the MIT-Portugal Program (until 2011). In 2008, she was a short-term visiting scholar at MIT, where she attended several Sloan-MIT MBA courses on Innovation and established several research collaborations under the scope of her research and teaching projects. In 2018-2019, she was a short-term visiting scholar at MIT (4 months) and UC Berkeley (3 months) as part of her sabbatical leave where she established new collaborations, attended a number of courses and developed innovative projects. Since 2010, she integrated the Bioprocess Systems Biology Group where she established her research group within the field of synthetic biology. Her current research interests are synthetic biology, cancer diagnosis and prevention, functional food, biosurfactants and bioprocess development. She participates(ed)/coordinates(ed) a number of national and European funded projects and co-promoted with industrial collaborators. She published more than 150 papers in international journals with peer-review, 12 full papers in international conference proceedings, 35 book chapters, edited 1 book, and participated in 130 and 83 international and national conferences, respectively. She holds an h-index of 52 with 10511 citations. Additionally, Lígia has been involved in the launching of several spin-off companies in the Life Sciences field. She was member of the Scientific Committee of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI-JU) that is focused in the area of circular bioeconomy and has as mission the implementation of the innovation and research agenda (SIRA - Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda) developed by the Bio-based Industry Consortium (BIC) and supported by the European Commission. She is an expert evaluator for many entities and funding schemes, e.g. Horizon Europe. In addition, she has been involved in a number of educational projects at different levels, was the Director of the Masters in Technology and Food Science (joint-course with the Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto) (2014-2019) and she is a member of the Program Studies Steering Committee, PhD Program in Bioengineering (MIT-Portugal). She supervises/supervised 17 Post Docs; 33 PhDs and more than 100 MSc students and industrial trainees.
