Ana Ramos got the PhD integrated as researcher the Research Centre CQFB, hosted at FCT NOVA, Chemistry Department, which became the actual Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry, belonging to the Research Group Cultural Heritage and Responsive Materials, CHARM. Her scientific interests and activity were always based on polymers, and came to be developed in two distinct areas, to which in the last two decades, a third has been added: 1. Chemical reaction engineering and catalysis based on the study of fine chemical reactions and environmental catalysis. Regarding fine chemical reactions the research focused the development of green processes (the use of heterogeneous catalysts) as alternative to the traditional ones, for the production of valuable compounds as aromas and precursors for pharmaceutical industry, starting from pine gum derivatives such as pinenes, renewable raw materials. In what concerns environmental catalysis subjects like catalytical depolymerization and pyrolysis of plastics residues and production of biodiesel by transterification reactions of used oils and others were studied. In low temperature reactions I have a special interest about polymeric catalytic membranes, in what concerns membrane preparation methodologies, polymer modifications in order to use the polymer itself as a catalyst, preparation of composite membranes by embending or grafting heterogeneous catalysts in the polymer matrix. The application of these membranes to polymeric catalytic membrane reactors is the main objective of these studies, as these reactors represent and advance in green technologies as they integrate reaction and separation processes and enable to avoid completely or decrease the use of solvents. 2. Characterisation of polymers from the point of view of the correlation of chain size (analysed by the determination of average molecular weights and molecular weight distribution), chemical structure and thermal characteristics (determination of transition temperatures) with physical behaviour, aiming at foreseeing potential applications. Lately these studies were mainly dedicated to polymers obtained by bioprocesses like polyhydroxyalkanoates, and to the polysaccharides carrageenans, pectins and chitosan. Also has been strongly involved in projects about natural polymers extraction from food residues and others (e.g. extraction of chitin from shrimp shells and production of chitosan, extraction of pectin from orange peels and of carrageenan’s extraction from Portuguese coast algae). 3. Since 2001 cooperates with the Conservation and Restoration Department of FCT NOVA, teaching the background of polymer science in half of the course of Polymers in Conservation and supervising and co-supervising seminars and MSc. and PhD theses. The research work related with this area involves polymer characterization and the correlation polymer structure/chemical characteristics/physical behaviour /ageing/degradation and the interaction polymer/support materials, applied to cultural heritage. In this context contributed to the resolution of case studies involving synthetic paint binders used in modern and contemporary art, adhesives for glass consolidation and wood carving, materials for reinforcing graphic documents, degradation of polyurethane used in contemporary sculpture, degradation of cellulose acetates in photographic negative collections, among others. Brought also to the department the knowledge about the importance of the relationship between the polymers’ chemical production process and technology used, the polymers’ processing and the ageing and degradation phenomena; for all these aspects, when they deal with plastics or other any kind of polymeric material acts as consultant and collaborator. At this time, always linked to polymers and the problems of degradation and conservation of cultural heritage, the collaboration is permanent and was supervisor of four finished doctoral theses, and two on course.
