Professor Catedrático da Universidade de Coimbra, onde ensina Inteligência Artificial, Criatividade Computacional, Programação para Design, Design de Som e outros tópicos. Doutoramento e Agregação em Eng. Informática pela Universidade de Coimbra. É membro do grupo Cognitive and Media Systems (CMS) do Centro de Informática e Sistemas da Universidade de Coimbra (CISUC), unidade de investigação financiada pela FCT e classificada como Excelente. É presentemente Vice-Presidente da Direção do Instituto Pedro Nunes e Provedor Académico da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra. Desenvolveu trabalho pioneiro em Criatividade Computacional nos anos 90, tendo desde então assumido um papel ativo na área, incluindo: Chair do Working Group on Computational Creativity of Action COST 282 (2001-2003), co-fundador da série de workshops "Creative Systems" (2001-2003), membro do Steering Committee da International Conference on Computational Creativity (2006-2020), General Chair de duas edições desta conferência, ICCC'16, em Paris, e ICCC'20, em Coimbra, e Tesoureiro da Association for Computational Creativity (2015-2020). Esteve envolvido na Ação de Coordenação FET ProSECCo - Promoting the Scientific Exploration of Computational Creativity (2013-2016) - e no projeto FET STREPS ConCreTe - Concept Creation Technology (2014-2016). Participou ainda no projeto SOCIALITE, financiado pela FCT. Os seus interesses de investigação incluem ainda Computação Afetiva e Sistemas Multi-Agentes, especialmente no contexto de sistemas criativos, composição automática de música, computação de som e música, música interativa e desenho de som. Esteve envolvido em diversos paineis de avaliação dos programas FP7, FET e H2020. Foi Presidente da Comissão de Avaliação Externa da Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior (A3ES) para os cursos de Informática dos Institutos Politécnicos. Foi Diretor do Centro de Informática e Sistemas da Universidade de Coimbra (CISUC) (2008-2012) e coordenador do Programa Doutoral em Ciências e Tecnologias da Informação (2013-2016).
