Rita Costa, is a marine biologist (2005) with a Master (2010) and PhD (2017) in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Algarve, currently working in the establishment of physiological welfare indicators in wild caught fish at the Center of Marine Sciences, University of Algarve. With a vast research interest, she has had the opportunity to contribute to different subjects from aquaculture and genetics to immunology and development. The active collaboration in several national and European projects allowed her to perform animal experimentation with fish in different studies in national and European projects, which provided a strong knowledge of good practices in animal experimentation and, specifically, fish welfare. She has been involved in training activities for undergraduate students and outreach activities to the general public, as well as the supervision of graduate and master students. She is presently doing physiological assessments to register cumulative stress in onboard procedures that negatively impact fish welfare and validating the use of different methodologies to dose energetic substrates, hormones, metabolic enzymes and oxidative stress in fluids and tissues from wild caught fish.
