I am a Biological Anthropologist and Bioarchaeologist at the University of Coimbra, currently investigating human remains from the Mesolithic sites from Portugal. I hold a Ph.D. from the École Pratique des Hautes Études (PSL, Paris). My research focuses on biocultural transitions and population dynamics in Prehistory, with particular attention to contexts characterized by demographic change and environmental stress. To date, I have concentrated on two major regions: Southwestern Asia during the Late Pleistocene, a key zone of human population convergence, and the Iberian Peninsula during the Holocene, marking the last interactions between hunter-fisher-gatherers and early food-producing societies in Western Europe. A central feature of my work is the development and application of multi-modal plaeoimaging approaches to analyze human remains affected by severe post-mortem alterations, including crushing, compaction, and mineral encrustation. This methodological framework has enabled the systematic study of previously inaccessible fossils and and has substantially expanded the studyable anthropological record. I have analyzed remains from major sites and collections, including Qafzeh, Tabun, and Kebara (Southwestern Asia), Dar-es-Soltane II (North Africa), Le Regourdou, Coupe-Gorge, Lagar Velho, Muge (Western Europe), and Toca do Enoque (South America). I have secured funding through highly competitive international calls as principal investigator of four research projects (British and French foundations and the European Commission; ~€222,000) and as a team member on two additional projects (~€95,000). My work has been recognized through three international scientific awards. My academic output includes 13 peer-reviewed articles (nine as first author, one as senior author), one book chapter, two keynote lectures, and 31 conference contributions. My research has achieved strong international visibility and peer recognition, reflected in international collaboration (e.g. Max Planck Institute; Institut National des Sciences de l'Archéologie et du Patrimoine, Rabat, etc.) publications in leading journals, invitations to analyze collections in major institutions (e.g. British Museum, Institut de Paleontology Humaine), and extensive editorial and review activities, including for journals such as Science Advances. I collaborate with national and international research centers across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South America, contributing to the global reach of my work. My peers further acknowledged my scientific leadership by electing me Vice-President of the Groupe des Paléopathologistes de Langue Française. In parallel, I am strongly committed to knowledge transfer and public engagement. I have taught and lectured at universities in the United States, France, and Portugal, developed four scientific exhibitions, and participated in numerous outreach activities, including radio and television programs and public workshops. I regularly contribute to scientific blogs and media outlets, including Forbes, Le Monde, Público, and YLE. Through these activities, I aim to bridge scientific research and society, promote scientific literacy, and inspire future generations of researchers.
