Joana Magalhaes (JM) is an expert in ageing and disease mechanisms, with specific expertise in translation approach. JM holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (U.Porto, Nov 2011), focused on molecular mechanisms and therapies for neuropathies. Upon graduating, she joined the clinical neurosciences department at University College London (UK, 2012-16) where she originally described impaired lysosomal recycling as a neurodegenerative pathway and defined a new therapy for Parkinson´s Disease (PD), resulting in clinical trials. In 2017, JM was funded as PI with €300K to study neuroinflammation in PD at BRIC - U.Copenhagen (DK), where she described for the first time the essential role of PIAS2 in PD dementia. In 2019, JM took a maternity leave and returned to Portugal, joining i3S. She expanded her interests to systemic ageing, age-related diseases, and ageing therapies. Since 2021, she has been exploring the role of FoxM1 in ageing at the Ageing and Aneuploidy group. In 2023, she took another maternity leave. JM is a consultant in the biotech company Axodynamic, having contributed to raise ~80K€ since 2020 and a patent application (in preparation); since 2021, she collaborates with health company Insparya, contributing to one patent and a clinical trial application. JM wrote successful grants in different countries, securing a priming grant from UCL Neuroscience fund (co-PI; UK) and a grant from the Lundbeck Foundation (PI; DK), and was a team member in projects funded by national and international agencies, including FCT, Parkinson´s UK, MRC, Pfizer. JM has teaching, mentoring and supervising students (UCL, U.Copenhagen, UPorto, UAveiro). In the last 5 years (+2 maternal leave interruptions), JM published 1 last author article (CMLS, 2023), 5 first author articles (Mol Psychiatry 2021; Front Cell Dev Biol 2021; CMLS 2020; Sci. Reports 2018, HMG 2016), and 2 collaborative articles (Cerebral Cortex, 2021; Sci Reports 2022). Her commitment to translational research resulted in a phase 2 and a phase 3 clinical trial, a patent application and another in preparation, and a phase 3 clinical trial application. JM has 18 papers published in international peer review journals, with 1030 citations (666 of which in the last 5 years, with an h-index of 14 (Google Scholar). 1 article as senior author, 9 articles as 1st author, 8 articles as co-author.
