CRISTINA SILVA PEREIRA. I am an Associate Professor at ITQB NOVA, where since 2008 I am a group leader, and since 2013 hold a visiting academic post at the University of the West of Scotland, UK. Research in the Silva Pereira Lab gravitates around the study of filamentous fungi, especially their ability to sense and interact with the surrounds. We currently explore an eclectic mix of topics ranging from basic fungal physiology to bioactive compound discovery. Our strong biotech focus promotes a high interdisciplinary scientific landscape. We seek to better understand fungal behaviour (e.g. specialisation, key metabolic trails, resilience and pathogenicity) when placed in a heterogeneously, and continuously changing, niche. We wish to transform untapped natural resources into safe prodrugs and/or functional biomaterials with potential application in antifungal therapy. My team currently encompasses 18 researchers, including PhD and MSc students and postdoctoral scientists. I have published nearly 70 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (+ 10 peer-reviewed book chapters). I have led projects with accumulated funding of over 4M euros. This included 2 international consortia, the NATO-SFP grant and a European Economic Area grant (EEA) of 1.5M, 3 national I&D projects (FCT), and a CONSOLIDATOR GRANT by the EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL (2015, 647928, MIMESIS, ended Feb 2022). I have completed the supervision of 12 doctorates across different disciplines from Biochem and Biology to Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (+7MSc). I have been invited to present >35 talks in conferences/universities, nearly half as plenary/key lectures, and was the Chairman of the 3rd Symposium on Plant Apoplastic Barriers (2017). Since 2011, I am also a lecturer in several national/international PhD and MSc programs, and since 2018 co-coordinated the post-graduation StartUp Research jointly awarded by ITQB NOVA and NOVA SBE. I am currently a member of the executive board of the Research Unit Most Micro ITQB (2020). Peer-Reviewed Scientific Publications: in July 2022 the Google Scholar platform reported 67 papers in peer-reviewed journals (corresponding author in nearly half) with an h-index=28 and i10-index=46 (full list below).
