Teresa Santos-Silva graduated in Chemistry at NOVA FCT and obtained a PhD in Structural Biology in 2006. She is currently Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at NOVA FCT and a structural biology researcher specializing in protein crystallography and metalloenzymes. Her research focuses on protein–ligand interactions with biomedical and environmental relevance, including molybdenum-containing enzymes, biofilm-related proteins, and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. She has contributed to the structural characterization of metal-based compounds interacting with biological systems and to the understanding of ligand binding mechanisms using X-ray crystallography, SAXS, and complementary biophysical techniques. She has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and received the Clara Immerwahr Award (2014). She has also served as main arguer in PhD examinations in Biochemistry at national and international universities. Since 2009, she has supervised postdoctoral researchers, PhD and MSc students, contributing to the training of new scientists. She leads funded research projects, collaborates internationally, and serves on scientific evaluation panels. In parallel, her work has increasingly expanded into education, pedagogical innovation, and researcher development. Since 2024, she serves as Associate Dean for Pedagogical Innovation and Well-being at NOVA FCT. She founded the Community of Practice for Pedagogical Innovation, engaging over 240 faculty and researchers, and co-organized the Pedagogical Innovation Days in 2025 and 2026, bringing together over 100 participants. She also launched the first call for Pedagogical Innovation Projects at NOVA FCT, fostering innovation among faculty and researchers. In 2025, she created an innovative Mentorship Program, in collaboration with the Careers and Psychological Support Offices, which has already engaged over 420 participants. She also leads a EUTOPIA Connected Community focused on education, employability, and the development of PhD researchers. She has a growing interest in the role of generative AI in education, actively contributing to discussions, roundtables, and training initiatives on the topic. She authored an opinion article in Executive Digest and regularly participates in reflection sessions on the impact of AI in teaching and learning. This interest is reflected in her pedagogical practice, where she integrates AI tools into undergraduate and MSc teaching and promotes critical engagement with these technologies. At the doctoral level, she organizes workshops to support PhD researchers in the ethical and effective use of AI in their academic and professional development. Her contributions extend to academic service and institutional leadership. She served as evaluator of pedagogical innovation projects at Egas Moniz, is a member of Working Group 2 of a COST Cross-Cutting Activity, and has been nominated as NOVA representative to the Faculty and Staff Council of the EUTOPIA Alliance. Through these roles, together with her workshops on career development, communication, and pedagogical innovation, she bridges science, education, and personal development.
