Wolfram Erlhagen studied Physics and Mathematics at the Universities of Bochum and Bonn in Germany. As a fellow of the interdisciplinary doctoral program "Brain, Cognition and Neural Networks (KOGNET)" financed by the German Science Foundation, he conducted his doctoral work at the Institute for Neuroinformatics, Ruhr-University Bochum. In 1996 he obtained a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a thesis on Pattern Formation in Active Media with applications in Neuroscience. Since 2000, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Minho (Portugal). His research deals with the development and analysis of mathematical models for solving problems in Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, and Autonomous Robotics. More specifically, he develops and applies the theory of Dynamic Neural Fields, formalized by integro-differential equations, to model neuro-cognitive processes observed in humans and other animals and to endow robots with human-like cognitive capacities. Wolfram Erlhagen was a responsible researcher in several projects financed by the European Commission and the Portuguese Science Foundation. He served the European Commission as a project reviewer in the FP6, FP7, and Horizon2020 framework programs in the areas of Robotics, Cognitive Science, and Neuroscience.
